Parshas Ki Seitzei: Ramban – Know When To Be A Lamdan

Hillel teaches us one of the golden rules in interpersonal relationships. Do not do unto others what you do not wish upon yourself. Although the following argument is so ridiculous to a person of the minimum level of intelligence, nevertheless since the Yetzer Hara for lashon hara is so strong, the Chofetz Chaim (5:6) feels the need to address it.

If I am a working man and support my family, I would be more than flattered if someone said about me that I learn 3-4 hours a day. So therefore based on Hillel’s teaching I take the liberty to say about a Kollel Yungerman that he learns 3-4 hours a day. Oh, I am embarrassing him? Why I’d love if someone said that about me. Nonsense, says the Chofetz Chaim. Similarly it would be vile gossip, if I said about the wealthiest member of our community that he gave $18 to a recent appeal, feeling justified because for me this is a nice donation.

Don’t be such a Chochom! Diracheha Darchei Noam. The torah’s words and ways are sweet and beautiful. Don’t let the Yetzer Hara talk nonsense into your head. If he wants to be such a lamdan tell him to stop enticing you to waste your time and let you open a gemara where your lamdus is appreciated.

“Zachor Eis Asher Asa Hashem L’Miriam BaDerech B’Tzaischem MiMitzrayim”

The Ramban and other Rishonim count, among the Mitzvos Aseh Min HaTorah, the mitzva of remembering and saying with your mouth each day what Hashem did to Miriam when she spoke about her brother Moshe. The Chofetz Chaim in Shaar Tvunah Perek 12 says that being Mikayem this mitzva can save you from the aveira of Lashon Hara. More than just saying the pasuk, says the Chofetz Chaim, one must think about the incident in order for it to have its intended effect.
