Todays eMussar Lesson 8th Elul 5769

Today 8th Elul, 5769 – eMussar Lesson –
The Inherent Faith of Israel

Todays eMussar Lesson

eMussar – The Wisdom of Personal Growth
A daily inspirational, concise idea, with a suggested action.

DERECH HASHEM\THE WAY OF HASHEM

The Ramchal states (Derech HaShem 1:1), “Every member of the People of Israel must believe and know that there is a First Being, Who preceded creation and Who is eternal. He brought all things into existence and continues to sustain them. This being is HaShem, may He be blessed.”

Since HaShem is the Creator, we would assume that every nation and every person must recognize that there is a First Being. If so, why did the Ramchal specifically state, “Every member of the People of Israel must believe and know that there is a First Being”? In addition, he wrote that we must “believe and know that there is a First Being.” Doesn’t the knowledge of Hashem’s existence come before belief? That is, how can we believe in HaShem before we know of Him?

The Ramchal answers these questions in the next paragraph, “These things are known by teachings transmitted from the Patriarchs and Prophets. The entire Nation of Israel perceived the Presence of HaShem at the revelation of Mount Sinai, and attained a clear grasp of these truths. They taught these truths to their children, generation after generation, until this very day. In this light, Moshe Rabenu commanded them (Devarim 4:9), ‘You shall not forget the things that you saw with your own eyes – and you shall make them known to your children and to your children’s children.”

The faith in HaShem of the People of Israel is founded upon our living experience of “Knowing HaShem” at Mount Sinai. At that time, we heard Him speak and perceived His awesome and holy Presence. Every fiber in our being recognized that HaShem is the Creator, Sustainer, and King of the Universe.

How fortunate we are! While other nations try to understand the existence of HaShem through rational proofs, the truth of HaShem’s existence is etched – eternally – within the depths of our hearts and souls.

TODAY: Discover the holy place in your soul that experienced HaShem at Mount Sinai.

KESER SHEM TOV

KESER SHEM TOV

The Baal Shem Tov Times

Anthology of the Teachings of the Baal Shem Tov

KST 37.

The Baal Shem Tov taught:

The purpose of light-hearted conversation before Torah study is because human consciousness vacillates between a constricted state of mind, called “katnut [immature] ha’mochin,” and an expanded state of mind, called “gadlut [mature] ha’mochin.” These different states of mind are alluded to in the verse, “The chayot/angels run to and fro.”1 In order to rise from a constricted state of “immaturity” to an expanded state of “maturity,” one can make use of light-hearted jesting, thus opening his mind to learning and coming closer to G-d.2

Hence, the Talmud3 tells of two saintly men who would jest with people in order to alleviate their suffering, after which there was coming together of hearts, and they were able to elevate them.4

This is also alluded to in the verse, “[Abraham] took his two youths with him, and his son, Isaac,” for by using jest5with holy intentions, one is able to elevate the years6 of one’s youth7 with him as well.

1Ezekiel 1:14. This means that the angels are in constant fluctuation between proximity to, and distance from G-d, and this is mirrored in the fluctuation of human consciousness, as said here. The need for this fluctuation is so that the created being be able to maintain its sense of existence as seemingly separate from G-d, for if it were to come to the absolute realization and experience that it in reality, it is non-existent outside of G-d, it would indeed lose this seemingly “independent” existence and be swallowed by the Divine Existence. This spiritual phenomenon is mirrored in the waning and waxing in the physical world, as is evident from the moon’s cycles, the waves of the ocean, and all the inherent cycles that we find at all levels in the natural world.
2Rebbe Nachman speaks profusely about how joy opens the mind and frees it of the bonds and constrictions of the normal states of consciousness, proclaiming, “It is a great mitzvah to always be happy!” (LM I 89; 222; 282; II 10; 24). Indeed, modern research has verified that a happy state of mind has very positive effects on the brain and hence on the entire body. But the point made here is to use this positive and expansive state of body/mind to come closer to G-d. On a deeper level, this very state of being is itself a proximity to G-d, as is for that matter any type of pleasure, since it is G-d’s intention to provide us with pleasure, and all pleasures are in fact a constriction of Himself, so to speak, the Source of all pleasures.
3Tractate Ta’anit 22a.
4Toldoth Yaakov Yoseph.
5As known, Isaac’s name comes from the root of laughing, and indeed, his mother Sarah gave him this name with that intention – “Whoever hears [that I gave birth at such an advanced age] will laugh” (Genesis 12:6).
6The Hebrew word for two can also mean years.
7“Youth” here refers to one’s immature consciousness.

Translation and commentary by Rabbi Yehoshua Starrett.

Daily Wisdom Portion of Kabbalah 8th Elul 5769

Daily Wisdom Portion of Kabbalah – 8th Elul, 5769

The Wisdom of Kabbalah

Quotes of prominent Kabbalists

And he reasons all that “the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea (Isaiah 11, 9)”. Thus we see that the prophet conditions peace in the whole world with the filling of the whole world with the knowledge of G-d, just as we have said that the tough, egoistic resistance between people, along with deterioration in the international relationships, all these will not cease from the world by any human counsel under any conditions.

Our eyes can see how the poor sick turn over in dreadful pain, and humanity has already thrown itself to the extreme right as with Germany or to the extreme left, as with Russia, and not only did they not ease the pain, they have worsened the malady and agony and the voices rise up to the sky as we all know.

Therefore they have no counsel but to come to the acceptance of His burden, meaning that they aim their acts to the will of the Lord and to His purpose, as He had planned prior to creation. And when they do that, it is plain to see that with His work all envy and hatred will be abolished from mankind as I have shown above thus far, because then all members of humanity will unite into one body with one heart full of the knowledge of the Lord. Thus, world peace and the knowledge of G-d are one and the same thing.

Baal HaSulam, “The Peace.”

Today 8th Elul 5769 Little Mitzvos

Today 8th Elul, 5769 – “Little Mitzvos

Little Mitzvos Org

You may think, how does one little Mitzvo help . . .

Our times are calling out to us to do Teshuva, but it’s too hard for us to change our lives. Even when we try, we end up reverting back to nothing, everything as was. We MUST show HaShem that we are seeing the signs and that it means something to us.

In this way, when HaShem asks what did we did, we can reply “I took this on…”

You must not consider this “Little Mitzvos” as a replacement for the Shulchan Oruch – you must continue learning Halochos via mainstream Seforim and with Shiurim.
