Todays eMussar Lesson 10th Elul 5769

Today 10th Elul, 5769 – eMussar Lesson –
The Exquisite Beauty of Mitzvoth

Todays eMussar Lesson

eMussar – The Wisdom of Personal Growth
A daily inspirational, concise idea, with a suggested action.

THE PARABLES OF THE BEN ISH HAI

There was once a woman who was extremely beautiful and beloved to her husband. On her birthday, her husband sent her to a jeweler to pick out a ring. She chose one with a beautiful diamond that was priced at $10,000 and took it home for her husband’s approval. When she returned home and handed it over to her husband for his inspection. He looked it over and said, “This ring is worth $5000. If he will sell at that price I will buy it for you.” She took the ring from his hand and put it away. An hour later she handed it to him again, saying, “Take another look. Maybe it is worth more than you thought.” He looked at it for a short time and said, “This ring is worth only $4000. I’ll buy it for that price.” After a few hours she put it back in his hand and asked him to take another look. “This ring is only worth $3000. If he will accept that sum I will buy it for you.”

Realizing that the jeweler would never agree to such a low price, she took the ring and hid it in her drawer for two weeks. Then she took the ring out of the drawer, placed it on her finger, and said to her husband, “The jeweler brought a new ring which is worth more than the first one. Here look how nice,” she said, as she stretched out her finger for him to examine the ring. He was impressed and said, “This ring is worth $10,000. I will buy it for you for that price.” She told him that the jeweler is asking $20,000 for the ring, and pulled her hand away. After a half hour passed she showed him the ring on her finger and said, “Take another look.” He examined it and said, “It is worth $15,000. I will buy it for that price.” She quickly pulled her hand away and said, “He wants $20,000 and won’t settle for less.” A short time later she showed him the ring again. This time he looked at the ring on her finger and said, “This is an exquisite ring. It is worth much more than $20,000.” He gave her the money and she purchased the ring.

When she returned home, she told him, “The ring that you said is worth more than $20,000 is the same ring that you said was only worth $3,000. At first you looked at just the ring, alone; and the more you looked, the less it was worth. However, when I put the ring on my finger, my beauty enhanced the beauty of the ring. The more you looked at it, the more precious it was in your eyes!”

So too, when a person does a Mitzvah with joy and delight, the joy and delight enhances the value of the Mitzvah in the eyes of HaShem. Indeed, the more joy he has for the Mitzvah, the higher the value and splendor of the Mitzvah. In fact, the Arizal said that all of his esoteric Torah wisdom and holiness was engendered by the happiness and joy he had in the performance of Mitzvoth.

TODAY: Envision the wonderful joy of Mitzvoth filling your heart.

SelfGrowth Keep Smiling 10th Elul 5769

Self-Growth – Keep Smiling – 10th Elul, 5769

Self-Growth - Keep Smiling

Role Play

Children play at being Queen of Europe — President of the Americas — Field Marshall of Asia — Princess of Africa. As they play these roles, they become great, important people. From their game, they are noble and wise, powerful and pleasing.

We have other role models, larger even than such political figures — our precious fathers and mothers: Avraham, Yitzchak and Yakov, Sara, Rivka, Rachel and Leah. Moreover, the list goes on: Moshe, our teacher; Devora, the prophet; King David; Queen Esther, and on through our history to present-day sources of inspiration.

Like children, we should strive to be these personalities — play their role, copy their modes of behavior, the attitudes and conduct we understand them to have. Like children, let us imagine our way to greatness, not to lord over others, but to be warm, special people. Let us imagine our road to personal achievement, with belief, sincerity, patience. Let us be all that we want to be.

Excerpted from “Be a King“.

Have a growth-filled, uplifting day
