Parshas Bireishis: Beware Of The Friendly Neighborhood Snake

The snake was the first ever Ba’al Lashon Hara. He told Chava that Hashem won’t let her eat from the Eitz HaDa’as because then she will be able to create worlds just like Hashem himself.

Chazal compare a Ba’al Lashon Hara to a snake. People who peddle gossip are very popular, as they attract large crowds to listen to their nonsense. However at the end of the day they are despised like the snake. Everybody is afraid of them, lest they become his next topic of conversation.

But you can’t have it both ways. We run from the snake, scared that he will poison us. You should also run from the Ba’al Lashon Hara and not hang around enjoying his tales. It looks like fun but but it is all poison. Besides you never know when he will bite you.

“Zachor Eis Asher Asa Hashem L’Miriam BaDerech B’Tzaischem MiMitzrayim”

The Ramban and other Rishonim count, among the Mitzvos Aseh Min HaTorah, the mitzva of remembering and saying with your mouth each day what Hashem did to Miriam when she spoke about her brother Moshe. The Chofetz Chaim in Shaar Tvunah Perek 12 says that being Mikayem this mitzva can save you from the aveira of Lashon Hara. More than just saying the pasuk, says the Chofetz Chaim, one must think about the incident in order for it to have its intended effect.

Be A Nerd – Just Sit Very Still, Don’t Move Or Even Twitch

The Chofetz Chaim in his hakdama, lists 17 Lavin that you can be oveir with Lashon Hara. One of the them is Lo Sachanifu, do not flatter the sinners. By flattering and giving support to someone doing something inappropriate you become an accomplice to his crime.

When someone speaks Lashon Hara to you or before you, by agreeing with him or adding to what he said you are oveir Lo Sachanifu. Even if you only nod your head in approval you are oveir. This is especially important to remember when you are sitting with a large group. When Lashon Hara is said there is intense social pressure to chime in and show agreement with the consensus. Yet Chazal tells is that it is better to be a fool in the eyes of people (i.e., social nerd) our whole lives, rather than to be a Rasha before Hashem for even a short moment.

Parshas Ki Seitzei: Ramban – Know When To Be A Lamdan

Hillel teaches us one of the golden rules in interpersonal relationships. Do not do unto others what you do not wish upon yourself. Although the following argument is so ridiculous to a person of the minimum level of intelligence, nevertheless since the Yetzer Hara for lashon hara is so strong, the Chofetz Chaim (5:6) feels the need to address it.

If I am a working man and support my family, I would be more than flattered if someone said about me that I learn 3-4 hours a day. So therefore based on Hillel’s teaching I take the liberty to say about a Kollel Yungerman that he learns 3-4 hours a day. Oh, I am embarrassing him? Why I’d love if someone said that about me. Nonsense, says the Chofetz Chaim. Similarly it would be vile gossip, if I said about the wealthiest member of our community that he gave $18 to a recent appeal, feeling justified because for me this is a nice donation.

Don’t be such a Chochom! Diracheha Darchei Noam. The torah’s words and ways are sweet and beautiful. Don’t let the Yetzer Hara talk nonsense into your head. If he wants to be such a lamdan tell him to stop enticing you to waste your time and let you open a gemara where your lamdus is appreciated.

Parshas Ki Seitzei: Ramban – Miriam’s Shame Is Recorded

The Ramban at the end of Parshas Ki Seitzei writes (25:18) regarding the mitzva of Zechiras Miriam, you must tell the story of Miriam to your children and it should be passed down from generation to generation. Why would it be a mitzva to embarrass Miriam for all generations? The Ramban says that in Miriam’s honor the Torah should have hid this incident, however since this is such a widespread evil, it is worthwhile to publicize the incident in order that the severity of it be known to all.

Since every mother does not want to see her children make the same mistake as her, maybe this is the greatest zechus for Miriam that the memory of her name will prevent aveiros for all future generations. Yehi Zichra Baruch.

Hit Delete And Poof It’s Gone

If you speak Lashon Hara, you have let the cat out of the bag and you cannot know how far it will spread. Putting it back in, is not so easy. Given people’s enthusiasm to believe it and pass it on, it is usually not even possible.

Being Mikabel Lashon Hara on the other hand, does have an easier fix. Although listening to Lashon Hara is an aveira if done willingly, the aveira of Kabalas Lashon Hara is only if you believe it (See Chofetz Chaim, Hilchos Lashon Hara – Klal 6). Therefore, says the Chofetz Chaim, if you were Mikabel Lashon Hara and you regret your aveira, you should decide in your heart that it is not true and reject this story from your mind. That will reverse the bad deed that you have done.

Chofetz Chaim: Avoid The Post Seudah Shlishis Shmooze

The Chofetz Chaim says (Shaar HaZechira 13), “How good and proper is it to act in the manner I heard. A wise man once advised his friend, “In the summer months do not stand outside Shul after Seudah Shlishis to Shmooze. Two people will turn into three and then four, five, and six until at the end there will be a large gathering. Each one will speak about his business dealings the previous week. It is impossible that this won’t result in Lashon Hara and Leitzanus. All this happened because of the first person. Therefore a wise man should open up his mind’s eye.”

The Crazy Talking About The Crazy

It is illogical to believe a person who tells you that someone else did something bad. That the second person did something bad, may or may not be true. But the person telling you about it is certainly doing an Aveira, since he is speaking Lashon Hara. Would you believe a crazy person who tells you that someone else is crazy?

“Shoftim V’Shotrim Titen Licha B’Chol Shi’arecha”, appoint judges and police in all your gates. The Baalei Mussar tell us that this refers to the gates of a person that are exposed to aveira. You need a judge and policeman sitting right near your mouth to help determine what goes in and what goes out. You need it also by your eyes to let you know what you can look at and what sites should make you avert your gaze. The policemen are your eyelids and your lips. Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman Finds The Answer To The Riddle

The Magid Rav Shlomo Levenstein whose uncle lives next door to Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman said that he heard that Rav Aharon Leib said that he spends countless hours receiving and speaking to visitors of all kinds from across the Jewish spectrum. Each and everyone of them are wonderful people, Kulam Ahuvim Kulam Berurim Kulam GIborim Kulam Kedoshim. So why does Klal Yisroel suffer so much if we are a beautiful mosaic made up of such wonderful people, asks Rav Aharon Leib? Regardless Who You Are, Watch What You Say About The Jews!

Moshe, Yeshayahu, and Eliyahu, all uttered a single unflattering remark about Bnei Yisroel. Surely they did not lie, stereotype, or exaggerate, yet the were all punished. Moshe’s grandson became a servant to an Avodah Zara, Yeshayahu was burned on his mouth, and Eliyahu was commanded to anoint Elisha as his replacement.

Even the greatest protectors and defenders of the Jews who gave their entire being to Klal Yisroel, were punished severely for a single remark, although it was said for a purpose. Apparently the greatest leader is not more beloved than the Klal, in Hashem’s eyes. We should certainly refrain from wantonly saying negative things Klal Yisroel as a whole.

Friends Like Lavan

The night before Lavan meets up with Yaakov who ran away from Lavan’s house, Hashem warns Lavan in a dream not speak to Yaakov not good and not bad. Why shouldn’t Lavan say something nice?

There are some people that we don’t have single good word to say to them. Even if we fake a smile and say something nice, it is somehow a backhanded insult. We see by Bilam a descendant of Lavan that while his words seemed like Brachos to Bnei Yisroel, each one revealed the curse that he really had in mind.

If you can’t do it, maybe it is better if you don’t. As the old expression goes with friends like that, we don’t need enemies or better yet “Tut Mir Nisht Kein Toivis”!

Waiting Quietly For Moshiach

The Chofetz Chaim (Meir Einei Yisroel) says that someone who speaks Lashon Hara obviously does not hope and wait for Moshiach to come. The main thing holding back the Geula is Lashon Hara. Suffering For No Gain

Sometimes a Gezeira is placed on Am Yisroel by the Goyim that clearly yield them no benefit. The Nachlas Dovid (Drush 10) says that this is obviously a punishment for our speaking Lashon Hara.

One who speaks Lashon Hara is compared to a snake who eats but doesn’t benefit, since speaking Lashon Hara does not provide any benefit to the speaker. We are punished Mida K’Neged Mida by enduring harsh gezeiros that don’t even provide any benefit our oppressors. (B’Yad HaLashon 302)

Do’eg HaAdomi – Rosh Sanhedrin And Great Torah Leader Speaks Lashon Hara

Do’eg HaAdomi was from the greatest Torah giants of his generation. He was the Rosh Sanhedrin. He lost his Olam Haba and his name is synonymous with Lashon Hara. Dovid HaMelech, of the victims of his evil tongue, makes negative mention of his deadly foe numerous times in Tehilim.

The Chofetz Chaim in Be’er Mayim Chaim (1:7) says that Do’eg did not turn to Lashon Hara because he was evil. Shaul HaMelech, the mighty King of Am Yisroel, forced him to speak Lashon Hara. A Mored B’Malchus can be killed without judgement and Do’eg was scared. Keep in mind that Shaul HaMelech was a great tzaddik, head and shoulders above anyone in his generation. You could imagine Do’eg’s predicament. It is quite difficult to explain to the King, who happens to be a great tzaddik, the Halachos of Lashon Hara. So he didn’t, and the rest is history. Don’t let yourself become part of this kind of history!

The Big Payout For The First Customer

When someone speaks Lashon Hara he gets an aveira for each person listening. He also has the aveira of “Lifnei Iveir” leading the blind astray, because his speech in causing them to be Oveir on listening to Lashon Hara.

When you listen to Lashon Hara, you are also oveir on Lifnei Iveir because if the speaker had no one to talk to, he wouldn’t be able to do the aveira. If a lot of people subsequently join this conversation, the aveira of Lifnei Iveir multiplies because you helped initiate this conversation and now all the blind are leading the blind down a very, very, dark alley!

Off The Hook? Not So Fast…

We all know that Tshuva does not help for Lashon Hara unless the person you spoke about forgives you. We should keep in mind that once he forgives you, you are not absolved. You still need a Kapara from Hashem for being violating an aveira …and not just any aveira.

Lashon Hara is Kineged the three stringent aveiros of murder, illicit relationships, and avodah zara. If someone murdered someone and wanted to sincerely do tshuva, he would definitely without a doubt spend a lifetime trying to repent and never live it down. If you speak Lashon Hara it seems you must feel the same way. I never met anyone like that, nor do I personally feel that immense burden. Maybe I am just hanging around with the wrong crowd??

The Epitome Of “Cool”

Some of us are obsessed with being “cool”. It is the ultimate title conferred on someone in their lifetime. More often than not we do all the wrong things to try to earn that title. Here’s something that you can do that will make you one of the coolest people on the planet.

There has always been a mystique attributed to secrecy and privacy. This is a trait of some really cool people. Think about how cool you would be if no one would ever know what you thought about another person. How cool would it be for people to always guess what you thought about last night’s speech, chasuna, etc., and never really know because you never gave away your opinion in words or even by facial expressions.

I think you’d get lots of votes for the coolest person around, and more importantly, Hashem’s as well. What’s really great is that although titles don’t go with you to the grave, after 120 you’d continue to be “cool”. That’s important because it can get really hot up there!

The Tefila On The Tefila

We stand before the King of all Kings in a private audience during Shemoneh Esrei. It is going really well and we leave Hashem with a long list of things we want including the most beautiful of all Brachos, the bracha of Shalom. We finish the audience and we realize that Hashem would love to fulfill all of our requests.

The problem is that it is also up to us not to contradict what we claim are our foremost desires. Lashon Hara is not exactly something that is spoken by a person who truly desires to lead a peaceful and harmonious life with those around him.

Mar Bar Ravina understood this. He therefore composed a Tefila (see Brachos 17a) to say immediately after we finish saying the Bracha of Shalom. “Elokai Netzor Lishoni Meira….”. Hashem guard my tongue from evil and my lips from deceit. To those who curse me, let me remain silent…

No doubt that one who says this with great Kavana will have his wishes for peace fulfilled!

He’s Not A Big Learner

The Chofetz Chaim (4:2) says you may not say that a person does an aveira or does not do a specific mitzva even if most people are also not very careful about this mitzva.

He gives a classic example of saying that someone “is not a big learner”. Even though there are many people that “are not big learners”, nevertheless learning Torah is a mitzva. Saying that a person is not very zealous in his observance of this mitzva, no matter what the public perception is, is not flattering and is considered Lashon Hara. This applies for many similar mitzvos that fall into this same category.
