Teachings of the Sages 14th Kislev 5770

Two Tzadiks

ON LOVING THE EVIL-DOER

R’ Pinchas said: “How can we daven for someone to do teshuva? Are we not taught, ‘All is in the hand of heaven, except for the fear of heaven?’ But Hashem includes all souls, and whatever is in the Whole is also in each part. Each soul therefore includes all other souls. When you yourself do teshuva, you can bring your neighbor to do teshuva. This is because you are included in your neighbor, and your neighbor is included in you”.*

*Midrash Pinhas (A), cited in A Call to the Infinite, by Aryeh Kaplan, cited in “Included in Your Neighbor,” at A Simple Jew (C)

Joke of the day 14th Kislev 5770

Breslev Israel

A Jew is making a livelihood out of being the court astrologer. The King’s wife gets sick. The astrologer is called in. He happens to know a bit of medicine and knows she is going to die so he takes the opportunity to bolster his credibility. He says he sees in the stars that she will die in 3 days. Sure enough she dies. The King is very angry so he blames the astrologer. He calls him in and say’s: “Look in the stars and tell me when you are going to die.” The astrologer understands the King is going to kill him so he looks at the Horoscope long and intense and he answers: “Sire, I can’t tell exactly when, but I can see in the stars that the King will die 3 days after me”

Daily Torah Quote 14th Kislev 5770

Breslev Israel

Did the heated argument between the House of Shammai and the House of Hillel cause a rift in their personal relationship? The Talmud tells us not, for despite the fact that Beit Shammai argued with Beit Hillel, they still married amongst one another. This teaches us that they acted with friendship and love to one another.

SelfGrowth Keep Smiling 14th Kislev 5770

Intentions

Self-Growth - Keep Smiling
A bus can travel with a single passenger. The same bus can travel with sixty passengers. Similarly, our actions can carry little intention, or they can be full of intention. These intentions make our actions the more profitable and powerful.

Teachings of the Sages 13th Kislev 5770

Two Tzadiks

ON LOVING THE EVIL-DOER

R’ Pinchas said: “One must love even the sinful, but must hate their actions. Although it is forbidden to be close to the wicked, one must still love them, so that perhaps they will return to the path of the Torah. As our Rabbis teach us regarding Aharon, ‘He loved peace and actively pursued peace and brought people closer to Torah.’ (Pirkei Avot 1:12) By loving his fellow men, Aharon brought them close to Torah, bringing them back to the correct path. Although the Gemara (Pesachim 113) says that if one sees his friend sinning, it is a mitzvah to hate him, Sefer Hatanya (ch. 32) limits this to a friend who generally observes Torah and mitzvot, yet has spurned proper rebuke. However, regarding a person with whom one is not friendly in this manner, we find in Pirkei Avot, ‘Hillel was fond of saying, “Be a student of Aharon—love peace … love G-d’s creatures, and bring them closer to the Torah.”’ This refers even to those who are distant from Torah and the service of G-d, and for that reason are referred to merely as ‘creatures.’ They have to be drawn with bonds of love, hopefully bringing them back to serve G-d”.*

Joke of the day 13th Kislev 5770

Breslev Israel

A Saudi King has three prisoners – an American, a Brit and an Israeli. He calls them forward and tells them that they would receive a task and if they solved it they would live, if not they would be shot.”Here is my dog”, said the King, “I want you to make him talk. “The American replies: “To make a dog talk – this is impossible! ” Bang – the American was shot dead. The Brit walks forward with some hesitation and says: “I’ve heard about a lot of things. You can make parrots talk but I’ve never heard of anyone making a dog talk.” Bang – the British prisoner was shot dead. The Israeli walks forward and says: “No problem. I can make the dog talk”, whereupon the King says: “I will give you one year to make this dog talk”. Thereupon the King departs and leaves the Israeli alone to teach the dog how to talk. In walks the King’s animal trainer and says: “Look you fellow, how can you make this dog talk? I’ve never heard of such a case before.” The Israeli replies: “No problem. I have one year; in one year the King may die, the dog may die, perhaps even I may die, anything can happen.”

Daily Torah Quote 13th Kislev 5770

Breslev Israel

When a man details his claims and requests in speaking to G-d, and wants to win over G-d, as it were, the Creator of the Universe has a great pleasure. Therefore He sends to the man the words he needs to win over Him, as it were, in order to have this pleasure.

SelfGrowth Keep Smiling 13th Kislev 5770

Praying and Working

Self-Growth - Keep Smiling
We should think of ourselves as ultimately wealthy, possessing limitless funds, good health, strength, wisdom, etc. Why then do we lack so much? Why then do we suffer all that we so need? There are two reasons…
1) That we strive more to come closer to the Creator.
2) That we may sensitize ourselves to the suffering of others, and train ourselves to pray and work for them as well.
Combining these two ideas, we should be praying and working that our entire community should come closer to the Creator.

Joke of the day 12th Kislev 5770

Breslev Israel

There has been a lot of discussion about building a tunnel between England and France under the channel. Tenders are called and numerous submissions arrive, including one from Cohen and Green Contractors. Most submissions ask for $1+ billion, however, the Cohen and Green’s submission is only $50 million. The committee is astounded and wonders how it is possible to submit such a low price. They ask Cohen and Green to explain their low bid. Cohen replies: “It’s very simple. Both myself and Green, my partner from France, have a shovel. I start shoveling the tunnel from England and he starts shoveling the tunnel from France. Eventually, both of us meet in the center.” The committee members shake their heads incredulously and they say: “What if you miss the contact in the middle of the Channel?” Cohen replies cheerfully: “So then you’ll get two tunnels for the price of one!”
