Gedalia Is Taken To Task But We Still Fast

Gedalia ben Achikam is taken to task for being overzealous and halachicly incorrect for refusing to listen to the people who tried to warn him that Yishmael ben Natanya wanted to kill him. By wrongly not listening to Lashon Hara he caused his own downfall.

Here is a thought. Despite that he acted wrongly his death is still a fast day. Are there are any people who spoke Lashon Hara when they were not supposed to that we hold a fast for and mourn the day of their death? True a tzaddik is held accountable for even a small wrongdoing but the lesson of the day for us is not that we must be more lenient in listening to Lashon Hara. This seems quite sure.

“Zachor Eis Asher Asa Hashem L’Miriam BaDerech B’Tzaischem MiMitzrayim”

The Ramban and other Rishonim count, among the Mitzvos Aseh Min HaTorah, the mitzva of remembering and saying with your mouth each day what Hashem did to Miriam when she spoke about her brother Moshe. The Chofetz Chaim in Shaar Tvunah Perek 12 says that being Mikayem this mitzva can save you from the aveira of Lashon Hara. More than just saying the pasuk, says the Chofetz Chaim, one must think about the incident in order for it to have its intended effect.

Did You Make Your Annual Resolution To Stop Speaking Lashon Hara?

Thanks to the Chofetz Chaim and all the great people who walk in his path, we are all very aware that Lashon Hara is one of our greatest crimes. Every year we resolve that this is the year we will stop it already. How long does it last? Hours? Days? Weeks? The whole year? Do we get cynical about realistically being able to beat the habit at some point?

The Chofetz Chaim (Shaar HaTvuna 15) says, “No! You can do it.” There are many bitter things in the world that with enough cooking and preparing, can be made sweet. True the Yetzer Hara is a formidable enemy but Hashem gives each and every one of us the ability to conquer him and turn him into a puppy dog. “Aleh V’Hatzliach”, go climb the mountain and you will be successful!

Looking For People? Hashem Has Connections!

In his classic Sefer the Seder HaYom, Rav Moshe ben Yehuda Machir who lived in the golden age of Tzfas writes that there was a minhag to ask your friend Mechila after Yom Kippur is over. The reason is that you are not completely forgiven on Yom Kippur for aveiros between you and your fellow man unless your friend has forgiven you. Therefore now that you have done your tshuva for upsetting Hashem by harming your friend, you need to complete it by getting your friend’s forgiveness as well.

Lashon Hara is very hard to track down. Daven that Hashem puts it in the heart of your friend to be Mochel you without your asking. If you really stop speaking Lashon Hara, Hashem can do that for you. He knows a lot of people!

Hold On Tight To The Feeling Of Kol Nidrei Night

If you steal from someone, in order for Yom Kippur to be Michaper you must pay him back. Lashon Hara is trickier for a few reasons. First of all, do you really want to face your friend (or not such good friend) and tell him that you spoke Lashon Hara about him. That is very painful!

Secondly, when you steal from someone you may remember. Can you possibly remember all the Lashon Hara you spoke this year and who you spoke about. Sadly, probably not. Do your best and pray for the best. Next year before speaking try to remember the anguish and helplessness you will feel standing in Shul this Kol Nidrei night.

Bireishis All Over Again

The world was complete and everything was so very good and so perfect. It didn’t take long until the first aveira, Lashon Hara. The snake told Chava Lashon Hara that Hashem doesn’t want her to eat from the tree because that is the source of Hashem’s power to create the world. This Lashon Hara led to the destruction of the world as Adam knew it and we are still paying the price.

We have just gone through Yamim Nora’im and Succos and the world seems so perfect. We are still relatively clean from aveiros. We are going to read parshas Bireishis and start from the beginning. Don’t let the first opportunity for Lashon Hara to destroy everything.

Be A Nerd – Just Sit Very Still, Don’t Move Or Even Twitch

The Chofetz Chaim in his hakdama, lists 17 Lavin that you can be oveir with Lashon Hara. One of the them is Lo Sachanifu, do not flatter the sinners. By flattering and giving support to someone doing something inappropriate you become an accomplice to his crime.

When someone speaks Lashon Hara to you or before you, by agreeing with him or adding to what he said you are oveir Lo Sachanifu. Even if you only nod your head in approval you are oveir. This is especially important to remember when you are sitting with a large group. When Lashon Hara is said there is intense social pressure to chime in and show agreement with the consensus. Yet Chazal tells is that it is better to be a fool in the eyes of people (i.e., social nerd) our whole lives, rather than to be a Rasha before Hashem for even a short moment.

Parshas Bireishis: Beware Of The Friendly Neighborhood Snake

The snake was the first ever Ba’al Lashon Hara. He told Chava that Hashem won’t let her eat from the Eitz HaDa’as because then she will be able to create worlds just like Hashem himself.

Chazal compare a Ba’al Lashon Hara to a snake. People who peddle gossip are very popular, as they attract large crowds to listen to their nonsense. However at the end of the day they are despised like the snake. Everybody is afraid of them, lest they become his next topic of conversation.

But you can’t have it both ways. We run from the snake, scared that he will poison us. You should also run from the Ba’al Lashon Hara and not hang around enjoying his tales. It looks like fun but but it is all poison. Besides you never know when he will bite you.
