Poisonous Snakes

Someone who speaks Lashon Hara is compared to a snake. The gemara in Ta’anis (8a) tells us, in the future all the animals will gather around the snake and ask him, “The lion pounces his prey to eat and sustains himself, the wolf tears his enemies and nourishes himself. Why does the poisonous snake kill his enemy?

We can ask the same question when we poison other people’s reputation with no gain to ourselves.

“Zachor Eis Asher Asa Hashem L’Miriam BaDerech B’Tzaischem MiMitzrayim”

The Ramban and other Rishonim count, among the Mitzvos Aseh Min HaTorah, the mitzva of remembering and saying with your mouth each day what Hashem did to Miriam when she spoke about her brother Moshe. The Chofetz Chaim in Shaar Tvunah Perek 12 says that being Mikayem this mitzva can save you from the aveira of Lashon Hara. More than just saying the pasuk, says the Chofetz Chaim, one must think about the incident in order for it to have its intended effect.

Money Problems?

Although there is no Tzoraas nowadays the Chofetz Chaim (Shaar HaZechira 6) brings from the Sefer HaKanah that poverty is the punishment for Lashon Hara today. It accomplishes the same objective as Tzoraas. It humiliates a person and forces him to live alone, breaking the Ga’ava that causes Lashon Hara like Rabbeinu Yonah says in Shaarei Tshuva.

The Alter of Slabodka – Don’t Complain About The Weather In Eretz Yisroel

Rebbi Ami and Rebbi Asi lived in Eretz Yisroel. When they gave their Shiur in the summer they would move into the shade when the hot sun would shine on them. In the winter they would move into the warm sun as soon as it came out (Kesubos 112). Rashi says that they did this in order to insure that their Talmidim would not complain about Eretz Yisroel.

The Alter of Slabodka points out that every one knows the summer is hot and the winter is cold. Why were they so concerned that no one complained? Would this harm the image of Eretz Yisroel? We see from here how careful one must be about Lashon Hara even about Eretz Yisroel. (MiShulchan Govoa – Parshas Shelach)

The Golden Great Bridge

Rav Goldwasser the Mashgiach of Yeshiva Ohr Yisroel explains why Shmiras HaLashon is tied to life and death. In Bereishis it says that Hashem blew a neshama into the body He created and it became a “Nefesh Chaya”, a live spirit. Targum translates it to mean “Ruach MiMalila”, a talking spirit.

The bridge connecting life and death, our neshama and guf, is our words. Through words we transform our bodies, formed from earth, into Malachei Elyon. If a person uses his spirit to sully his body with evil and wasteful speech, it is better to blow up the bridge. Without the bridge there is no life.

Baba Meir Abuchatzeira: The Key To Zachor Is Shamor

A young married man learning in Kollel once came to Rav Meir Abuchatzeira, the son of the Baba Sali, and a Torah giant in his own right. He cried to him that no matter how much he learns and reviews, it doesn’t remain in his head and he constantly forgets. Baba Meir said to him, “it says Zachor V’Shamor BiDibbur Echad”, remembering and watching are inseparable. If you “watch” your speech and your eyes from unclean things only then can you “remember” the Torah. (B’Yad HaLashon pg. 193)

Rav Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz: How To Achieve The Ever Elusive Ahavas HaBriyos

If you look at the lives of many of the great tzaddikim, they all excelled in the trait of Ahavas Yisroel. They genuinely loved every Jew. I always wondered how that is possible. After all, I, who am not a great Jew, have a hard time swallowing the wrongdoings of people around me. How much more so these great tzaddikim who you would expect to become enraged when seeing evil all around them. There are many obvious and logical answers given by Chazal, but for some reason we can’t manage to transfer these ideas from our mind to our heart, to put into practical use.

In a letter, Rav Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz (Imrei Da’as vol. 2, Byad HaLashon pg. 366) writes that if we stop speaking Lashon HaRa, Ahavas HaBriyos can finally make its way home, to our heart. Then we can finally fulfill the great mitzva of V’Ahavta L’Reiacha Kamocha to every single Jew with a full heart, just like the great tzaddikim.
