HITBODEDUT MEDITATION AND PERSONAL PRAYER – Water wears away stone

Even if many days and years pass and it seems as if you have accomplished nothing with your prayers and conversations with G-d, don’t give up! Every single word makes an impression.

“Water wears away stone” (Job 14: 19 ) . It may seem that water dripping on hard stone could not make any impression, yet when water drips on stone continuously for many years, it can literally wear a hole in the stone. We actually see this.

Even if your heart is like stone and it seems that your words of prayer are making no impression at all, still, as the days and years pass, your heart of stone will also be softened. For: “Water wears away stone”.

Sichot Haran #234

Rabbi Nachman of Breslov
“It is a great mitzvah to be happy.”

Todays eMussar Lesson 9th Tishrei 5770

eMussar Lesson for 9th Tishrei, 5770 –
Showing Sensitivity to Others

Todays eMussar Lesson

eMussar – The Wisdom of Personal Growth
A daily inspirational, concise idea, with a suggested action.

THE PARABLES OF THE BEN ISH CHAI

Rebe Nathan ben Abba said in the name of Rab: He who is dependent upon his friend’s table, the world is “dark” to him. (Beitzah 32b)

There were once two wealthy men named Reuven and Shimon. Both of their businesses failed and they lost all of their money. They were left with no other way of support other then to go door to door and beg for handouts. The Rabbis of their city wrote a letter on their behalf that authenticated their dire situation. The two men walked from city to city in order to collect some funds.

One day they entered the house of a prosperous man to ask for support. The wealthy man gave Reuven $200, while to Shimon he gave only $20. When they left his house, Reuven began to weep bitterly, as tears rolled down his cheeks. Shimon was astounded. He asked Reuven, “Why are you crying? He gave you $200, while he gave me just $20. You received ten times the amount that he gave to me. And why is it that you cry only with this man and not at all the other wealthy men that we approached?”

Reuven answered, “Do you know why he gave me so much more than you? This man used to be my customer. I used to send him merchandise and he would pay me a huge sum. And now my fate has reversed. I have no merchandise to send him, and I am over my head in debts. My only recourse was to ask him for charity. That is why I am crying. Whereas I did not know the other wealthy men that we asked, so I was not ashamed before them.”

Whenever a person has to ask others for help, especially financial assistance – it is always embarrassing and awkward. How much more this is so, when a person has to ask for help from someone who was once his peer in wealth. Therefore, let us conduct ourselves with sensitivity and compassion to all those who need our help. In this way our kindness will bring them both material benefits as well as vital emotional comfort and support.

TODAY: Show extra sensitivity to another person.
