Todays eMussar Lesson

eMussar – The Wisdom of Personal Growth
A daily inspirational, concise idea, with a suggested action.

THE PARABLES OF THE BEN ISH HAI

There was once a man who held the contract for all the fishing rights in the kingdom. One day, while he was out on his boat, he saw another man fishing off the pier. He ran to the palace and lodged a protest to the king. “This man did receive a royal contract to fish,” said the king, “it was a mistake, but a royal decree cannot be rescinded. Therefore, in order to compensate you I will offer you the rights to another enterprise. Whatever you choose will be your exclusive domain.”

The man thought it over and then said to the king, “I do not want to impinge on anyone else’s livelihood. Rather, let me have a contract for a new commodity. Therefore, I request that the king grant me the rights to all the air in the kingdom.”

“What,” laughed the king, “can you possibly do with air?” “I know exactly what to do with air,” he responded, “just prepare the contract and I will transfer $10,000 to the royal treasury in order to secure the rights to air.” The king and every one in the palace joked about this man’s foolishness. Nevertheless a contract was issued and the full payment was received by the royal treasurer.

The next day the man went to all the blacksmiths and jewelers. He demanded payment for all the air they blow by the bellows to build the fire. Without that air they would not me able to do their work of melting the iron and smelting the gold. The craftsmen complained to the king. However, the king ruled that they must pay because this man did hold the concession for all the air in the kingdom. The following week he met with the sea captains and set a price with them to pay for the winds that powered their boats. The third week he sent a bill to all the homeowners who opened the windows to let the fresh air into their homes. On the fourth week he collected a fee from every person in the kingdom for the life giving air they breathe, every moment of their lives. Within a few days this man became the wealthiest person in the kingdom!

This parable teaches us the invaluable trait of being resourceful. Through initiative and cleverness a person can succeed with the means at his disposal. Whereas a foolish person believes that his situation is helpless. He is consumed with jealousy for the success of others, instead of focusing on the options available to him.

Let us use our wisdom, energy, and creativity to pave the way to success in our earthly and heavenly affairs.

TODAY: Take a few minutes to consider other options that might be beneficial to you.

Motivational Quote

Before…

“Move away from evil, and do good!” Before we can grasp what is beautiful and empowering, we must let go of what is ugly and depressing. We must identify our feelings of distress, anger, jealousy, etc. and replace them with calm, happy thoughts. Then we can start doing great things.
