Todays eMussar Lesson 21st Elul 5769

Today 21st Elul, 5769 – eMussar Lesson –
Focus on the Good

Todays eMussar Lesson

eMussar – The Wisdom of Personal Growth
A daily inspirational, concise idea, with a suggested action.

PIRKEI AVOS\THE ETHICS OF OUR FATHERS 4:20

“Rabbi Matyah bar Charash said: Initiate a greeting to each person. Be the tail of the lions and not the head of the foxes.”

When a lion makes his way through the jungle, he tends to raise his tail above his head. This is a metaphor for the correct approach in human relationships. Just as the lion raises his tail over his head, so too, it is fitting to find good points in all people; even in those who are less worthy than ourselves. Even more, to accentuate their virtues and to consider them as more distinguished than we. That is, “to raise them” over our own status.

Whereas the fox, lowers his head below his tail. This symbolizes people who lower the honor of others. They look for a negative point and magnify it until they lower the status of those people greater than themselves. Like the lowered head of the fox, “they put down” those who are deserving of respect.

Many factors affect the complex world of personal interactions. Rabbi Matyah gives us one single rule to follow in order to enhance all of our relationships. In a nutshell, look exclusively at the person’s good points. By focusing on their good points, we will grant them respect. Like the tail of the lion, we will “raise them even above ourselves,” opening the door to healthy and wholesome relationships.

The opening phrase of the Mishneh supplies us with an easy technique to start each interaction with respect. That is, “Initiate a greeting to each person.” By being the first one to say, “HI! HOW ARE YOU,” we set the relationship on a respectful foundation and infuse it with a powerful dose of honor.
[Based on the Yavetz and R”i Nun Shushan]

TODAY: Focus – exclusively-on the good points of others (as well as yourself); and grant them respect.

By Rabbi Zvi Miller.
