Many have the custom of singing Ma’oz Tzur and other Chanukah songs at the Friday night Shabbat table. Al Hanissim for Chanukah are added in the Birchat Hamazon and in the the Shabbat Amidah prayers, and full Hallel is recited after the shacharit (morning) Amidah.

Eighth day of Chanukah
The eighth and last light of Chanukah takes us beyond the finite world (encompassed by the seven lower sefirot) to the higher world of Binah (Understanding), the eighth level above Malchut. At the time of the lighting of the eighth light and for the whole last day of Chanukah tremendous spiritual influence flows down to all who are willing to open themselves to it.

R’ Pinchas said: “He who truly loves another can read his thoughts, whether good or evil”.^*

Baron Rothschild comes to Israel and visits the Kotel. An unusually colored piece of paper stuck in the Wall catches his eye. He takes out the note and reads it. It’s a plea to G-d: “Please, it’s urgent, my child is getting married. I need $100,000.” The note includes the circumstances, the pleas, and even the address. The Baron is moved and he drives to the man’s home and gives him a check for a $10,000.The next time he’s at the Kotel he notices the same type of paper. Curious, he takes out the note and reads it. “Dear G-d, thank you very much for sending the $10,000. I really appreciate Your help. But why did you send it with Baron Rothschild. He takes 90% commission!”

Take the Trouble

It takes an effort to turn up the corners of our mouth. We need to exert ourselves to smile. But when we do so, we have no regrets. It’s worth the trouble.

Similarly, with all that’s good and positive in life, we need to make the effort — we need to take the trouble. Very few of life’s goodies come by themselves. We need to stab our fork into our food. We need to raise it to our mouths. We need to open our mouths. We need to chew.

When we are in pain, when worries and regrets surround us, when anger and frustration invade us, we have a way out; we have a safe haven — a heaven where we may revive our spirits, conquer our sadness, expel our disappointments. This refuge lies in the world of thought. Turn your mind towards positive, happy ideas — inspiring, energizing concepts. In the world of thought, you regain your strength and enthusiasm, your love of yourself, and of life.

But to enter this world, you need to exert yourself, at least a little.

ON LOVING ONE’S FELLOW JEWS

R’ Raphael overheard his wife scolding her maid. He rebuked her, saying: “You have no right to give pain to a Jewess. A child of Israel is very, very precious”.^*

A Jewish grandmother is babysitting her grandson at the beach. He has a pail and shovel and is digging in the sand on the ocean’s edge. Suddenly a gigantic wave rolls in from the ocean, scoops up the child with his pail and shovel, and sweeps them out to sea. The horrified grandmother shrieks in horror and starts pleading with G-d: “Please, please, my grandson, save him, you’re a merciful G-d, he is only a child, etc. etc.” Another wave comes in from the ocean and deposits the little boy with his pail and shovel exactly where he was before.The grandmother looks him over with great relief and then she yells at G-d: “Where is his hat? He had a hat!!”

Complaint

A great rule of happiness is: never complain. Do not complain to others — not friends, not family. Do not complain to the Creator. Do not complain to yourself — even in your thoughts.

To complain gives us a certain pleasure. However, the loss from complaining outweighs any gain. For to complain is to say that we are unhappy — and when we are unhappy, we can’t be happy. Moreover, when we complain we enlarge the reason for the complaint — we give it extra strength to hurt us. We empower it to possess us.

But when we look for the good in our situation, when we take pleasure in our situation, we attribute an extra pleasure to the world — and an extra pleasure to its Creator. In this way, the source for our complaint helps us appreciate the beauty of our lives. It opens a door to all that we hope for, and all that we dream.

In his last year, R’ Raphael said: “Put aside all Mitzwoth and labor to unite Jewish hearts”.^*

There was a religious Jew who lived near a river. A hurricane came and the water rose; the river reached the main floor. Thereupon a dingy arrived to save him. He refused to get in and said: “Don’t worry. G-d provides.”The water level continued to rise and the Jew went up to the second floor. A boat arrived urging him to get in and save himself. He replied nonchalantly: “Don’t worry, G-d will help me.”The water rose again and the Jew climbed to the top of the chimney. A helicopter arrived; however, the man replied: “Do not worry, G-d will save me.”The water continued to rise and sure enough the Jew drowned. He went to heaven and met G-d. He reproached Him: “Dear G-d, why didn’t You save me? You know I was a religious man.”G-d replied: “First I sent you a dingy, then I sent you a boat and finally I sent you a helicopter. What more did you want Me to do?”

Second day of Rosh Chodesh Tevet
On this day Esther was taken to the palace of Achashverosh (Esther 2:16).
On Friday afternoon, the Chanukah lights must be lit before sunset, and they should be lit before the Shabbat candles. Where possible it is preferable to pray the afternoon Minchah service before kindling the Chanukah lights.

Eighth light of Chanukah
Torah Reading: Mikeitz, Gen. 41:1-44:17, Rosh Chodesh reading Numbers 28:9-15 ; Chanukah reading Numbers 7:54-8:4; Haftara for Second Shabbat of Chanukah: 1 Kings 7:40 –50.
Many have the custom of singing Ma’oz Tzur and other Chanukah songs at the Friday night Shabbat table. Al Hanissim for Chanukah are added in the Birchat Hamazon and in the the Shabbat Amidah prayers, and full Hallel is recited after the shacharit (morning) Amidah.

Eighth day of Chanukah
The eighth and last light of Chanukah takes us beyond the finite world (encompassed by the seven lower sefirot) to the higher world of Binah (Understanding), the eighth level above Malchut. At the time of the lighting of the eighth light and for the whole last day of Chanukah tremendous spiritual influence flows down to all who are willing to open themselves to it.
