Believe in HaShem’s Forgiveness

FAITH AND TRUST

The following parable shows us how to conquer the challenge of despair:

“Your life is hanging by a thread and you need immediate emergency surgery!” warns Dr. Field. “This is a risky procedure and I will not operate until you pay the entire sum in cash.” The patient stubbornly replies, “I am not willing to pay!” As a means to deal with the tension, a friend of the patient pulls the doctor aside and says, “You are scaring the patient and therefore you will not be able to save him. He thinks you are demanding the payment because you don’t expect him to survive the operation. Therefore, you have caused him to “give up” and you will not be able to save him!”

Whenever a person makes a mistake or commits a sin, he should remind himself of the verse, “There is no righteous person on earth who does good and does not sin.” If a person despairs of being forgiven every time he commits a misdeed, he will never be able to improve his conduct. If he resigns himself to eternal damnation, he will never be able to appreciate the great compassion and forgiveness that HaShem extends to all people who engage in the process of repentance!

Indeed, if a person does not despair after committing a misdeed, he has already succeeded in WINNING THE BATTLE! Now that he has kept an optimistic attitude – both about HaShem as well as his ability to improve – he can try again. Eventually, he will get there!

The first line of defense in our faith is to NEVER GIVE UP. Our trust must be consistent with HaShem’s infinite mercy, compassion, and kindness!

The Mystical Light of the Baal Shem Tov

Section 19.

ONCE, the Baal Shem Tov was outside the city of Mezibush with his students, and the time for Mincha¹ arrived. His disciples said to him, “Rebbe, there is no water to wash our hands for Mincha.” The Baal Shem Tov took his walking stick and struck the earth and a spring of water burst from the ground. It flows until today, near Mezibush, and is called the Baal Shem Tov’s well. The Baal Shem Tov did many miraculous acts, the likes of which had not been seen since the days of the Tannaim², Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai³ and Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa. All the miracles were as a result of his constant attachment to G·d.

The Baal Shem Tov’s Teachings on Prayer

4.b3 Prayer sweetens the judgment of Malchus so that G·d’s decree can be changed from bad to good.

Nachmanides asks about the nature of prayer: How can it improve a Divine decree? Can G·d’s Will be changed? If a person were praying for themself, we could understand how His Will can be changed. For just as they changed their own behavior from bad to good, so G·d’s decree can be changed from bad to good. But this principle should not apply to prayers offered on someone else’s behalf.

The Baal Shem Tov explained, in the name of his Heavenly teacher, Achiya HaShaloni, that prayer sweetens the judgment of Malchus, which is called Din , in its root in Binah. When you pray in this way for a friend, you bind them to their Supernal root, and they become a different person.

To explain this further, it is known that the Divine decree is a drop of seed in the womb of Malchus, and that it is composed of letters. As the Talmud says: “Betzalel knew how to combine the letters that went into the creation of heaven and earth.” Now, the King of Kings surely does not carry out His decrees Himself. He appoints an emissary, who makes use of the word-combinations that convey the decree. However, the emissary can rearrange the first letters of the words so that they imply something else.

Now, the Tzaddik is the emissary of the Shechinah, who knows how to sweeten the judgments and bind the drop that is in Malchus to Binah, thus transforming it into something else.

Day 71 – Between Husband and Wife

SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM – Laws of Loshon Hora 8:10-11

The Chofetz Chaim now turns his focus in a different direction — to whom am I forbidden to relate loshon hora? He answers, “There is no difference regarding this prohibition, whether the listener is one’s relative or someone distant, or even one’s own wife — unless it is something of which he must inform her for a constructive purpose.”

The Chofetz Chaim focuses on a very typical situation. A husband comes home and his wife asks, “How was your day?” or, “What’s new in shul (synagogue)?” The Chofetz Chaim cautions us strongly against using such questions as a forum for telling one’s wife of any arguments or other unpleasant encounters which he had during the course of the day. Not only is this loshon hora, but it does further damage, since the wife, out of loyalty to her husband, is likely to harbor animosity towards the person whom the husband feels has wronged him. This may lead to her finding the opportunity to castigate the man or his family members, so that a situation which could have been resolved, will instead become a full-scale feud between families.

The Chofetz Chaim adds a bit of marital advice. He says that if a husband habitually complains to his wife about the slights and indignities which he perceives have been heaped upon him, then he actually lowers himself in her eyes. She begins to believe that others do not respect him, and that perhaps he is not really worthy of respect. The Chofetz Chaim quotes Avos D’Rabbi Nassan (7:3) which explains the words of the Mishnah, “Do not speak excessively with a woman,” as making exactly this point; excessive complaining to his wife lowers a man’s esteem in her eyes.

The Chofetz Chaim points out that there are clearly cases of toeles (constructive purpose) where spouses are allowed to, and ought to, share information. This applies to business partnerships, as well. Certainly one partner can warn the other about problems with a potential vendor or customer. However, one must be careful to release only that negative information which is absolutely essential.

If it is possible to solve the problem without saying anything negative, then that is the strategy required. For example, your wife says, “Mrs. Klein invited us to dinner next week.” But you have reason to believe that the kashrus level in the Klein’s house does not meet your standards. To avoid speaking loshon hora you should think of some benign reason for declining the invitation. If your wife finds your excuse unreasonable and is upset, then you may tell her your real reason.

In truth, there are many ways to protect a spouse, business associate or oneself from harmful from her aunt and cousins people or situations without resorting to loshon hora. Although it might take a little effort or ingenuity, our Sages assure us that the dividends will surely be well worth our while.

Our times are calling out to us to do Teshuva, but it’s too hard for us to change our lives. Even when we try, we end up reverting back to nothing, everything as was. We MUST show HaShem that we are seeing the signs and that it means something to us.

In this way, when HaShem asks what did we did, we can reply “I took this on…”

You must not consider this “Little Mitzvos” as a replacement for the Shulchan Oruch – you must continue learning Halochos via mainstream Seforim and with Shiurim.

A Tribute To The Book That Was Never Written

As the last remaining survivors of the generation that suffered through the holocaust reach their golden years, a deluge of books and memoirs have flooded the market, and rightfully so. Each survivor’s story is unique and needs to be retold. The Belzer Rebbe said that anyone who survived the ordeal surely had two Malachim protecting them on either side. That makes for interesting and important reading.

What’s unique about every single book that is published is that these firsthand accounts are all told by survivors. Not to diminish their stories, as each person’s survival was worse than death many times over, however where are the books by the people who were murdered, starved to death, gassed, burned, and a thousand other cruel life ending tortures? What was their end like and what did they learn from their experience?

Each one of them was died Al Kiddush Hashem and we don’t even have single first hand account of their experience in death. How does it feel to be beaten so badly that you don’t survive? What was it like when their Neshama could not take it any more and tore itself from their bodies? How does the Malach HaMaves confront a person who dies Al Kiddush Hashem? How are they greeted in Shamayim? What justice do they see from the vantage point of the Olam HaEmes? What is the point and how will this all end?

“Etzrach Mi Yitein Eifo V’Yictivun Milai”, I scream, “if only I can write my story” (Kinos 8). Sadly for us, dead people don’t tell stories, only survivors do. Their stories are written in blood not ink, but the author is not among the living to be able to form the words. These unwritten stories come from every generation and from every spot on earth where our ancestors carried their weary bodies and spirit. These stories come from places where they hoped to escape the bitter Galus and enjoy a brief respite, but more often than not the Tzaros caught up with them faster than they imagined.

Today we sit on the floor and say the Kinos as well as read the stories of the few remaining survivors from Klal Yisroel’s most recent tragedy. These stories shed some light on the pain but they are missing the punch line. However one glorious day in the near future we will be zocheh to read these unwritten stories.

Today we honor the still unpublished story that will one day arise from the ashes and bring Moshiach on its cover. It will surely be the all time bestseller. The title? “Hashem Melech, Hashem Malach, Hashem Yimloch L’Olam Va’ed.”

Guarding The Keilim of The Bais HaMikdash

The Ohr HaChaim HaKadosh in Parshas Pinchos brings from the Alshich HaKadosh that the mouth of person is like a Kli Shareis of the Bais HaMikdash because the greatest Kedusha is Kedushas HaTorah. Therefore your mouth, just like the Keilim of the Bais HaMikdash may not be used even for mundane matters and certainly not for Devarim Assurim.

“Zachor Eis Asher Asa Hashem L’Miriam BaDerech B’Tzaischem MiMitzrayim”

The Ramban and other Rishonim count, among the Mitzvos Aseh Min HaTorah, the mitzva of remembering and saying with your mouth each day what Hashem did to Miriam when she spoke about her brother Moshe. The Chofetz Chaim in Shaar Tvunah Perek 12 says that being Mikayem this mitzva can save you from the aveira of Lashon Hara. More than just saying the pasuk, says the Chofetz Chaim, one must think about the incident in order for it to have its intended effect.

May Hashem bless our efforts to master our eyes. May our collective effort to serve Hashem awaken great mercy in Heaven, so that we merit seeing the redemption of Klal Yisrael and the restoration of the Shechinah to the Kodesh HaKadashim.

Everyone has different abilities depending on the tribe they represent. Let us all unify and work together in the battle against the Sitra Acher.

WISDOM CAN ONLY BE LOWERED TO A CERTAIN POINT – IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND IT READ IT OVER TWO THREE TIMES AND THINK ABOUT IT

Regarding Dovid’s command to have Uriyah killed.

-  Dovid took Bat Sheveh and arranged to have her husband killed in battle.
-  We are not going to deal with Bat Sheveh, but rather why Dovid had Uriyah killed.
-  Uriyah was an officer under Yoev ben Tzuriah.
-  Yoev was Dovid’s cousin, he felt as if he also had some connection to the Malchus (kingship).

-  Meaning, not that he wanted the actual position, but that he was part of it. Therefore he wasn’t’t necessarily obligated to listen to Dovid.

-  Yoev killed three people in open opposition to Dovid. He killed Avner, Avisholom, and Amasah.
-  This fell under the category of rebellion.
-  Yoav was very powerful. Dovid therefore let him go unpunished until the days of Shlomo.
-  Dovid did execute the people who had helped Yoav in carrying out these deeds. Uriah was one of them.
-  Since there couldn’t be a straight out accusation he couldn’t be killed openly either.
-  That’s why Uriyah referred to Yoav as “my master” rather then “your servant”.

R’ Pinchas said: “After his death a Tzaddik ascends from one degree to another, higher and higher, until he becomes first a sacred letter, then a sacred thought and finally a sacred name” [191]. Similarly, R’ Pinchas said: “Many years after a zaddiq enters the future world, he is transformed into a divine Name, and he becomes a light for the fear of G-d”.^*

Perek Shira: The House Goose – The Only Living Eye Witness

The house goose sings “Hodu L’ashem Kiru Bishmo Hodi’u Ba’amim Alilosov”, thank Hashem, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people (Tehilim 105:1). Why the house goose? Why are they calling to all the nations.

Rav Sasson Chazan in his Sefer HaShira HaZos explains as follows. In Tehilim (117) it says, “Halelu Es Hashem Kol Goyim…” the goyim will praise Hashem for the kindness. The gemara in Pesachim (118b) as explained according to the meforshim, say that only the goyim who have plotted against us whose plots were constantly foiled by Hashem, know the amazing kindness that Hashem has done with us. We ourselves have no idea because these devious plans never came to fruition.

A house duck hangs around the house seeing the things that we do not. For example, a burglar may be stalking a Yid’s house in middle of the night, when suddenly the Yid wakes up to take a drink. The burglar is scared off and the only eyewitness is the house goose, taking this all in from the outside.

It is impossible for us to realize all the good Hashem does for us because much of it takes place behind our back. However the house goose is watching. Listen to it praise Hashem and follow suit, because in its song it is telling your story.
