A daily inspirational, concise idea, with a suggested action.
Today 3rd Av, 5769 – eMussar Lesson – The Perfect Faith
FAITH AND TRUST
By virtue of his trust in HaShem, Avraham Avinu inherited this world as well as the World to Come. Likewise, trust in HaShem will awaken the merit for our final – and ultimate – redemption.
The meaning of “trust in HaShem” is trusting in HaShem’s assurances even in matters which seem ‘implausible.’ For instance, after many years of Avraham being childless, HaShem promised him that his offspring would be as numerous as the countless stars. In light of the fact, that Avraham and Sarah were childless for so many years, it seemed unlikely that he would have such a large number of descendents. Nevertheless, he fully trusted in HaShem’s promise.
However, Trust in HaShem is not an end but rather the means to an end. That is, Trust in HaShem is the first step in the process of running HaShem’s promise through our intellect until we accept it as a concrete fact. In the case of Avraham, his thought process was as follows: HaShem assured me that I will have countless offspring. It is hard to imagine that we will have a child after so many years. However, HaShem is capable of performing any – and every – wonder. What’s more, HaShem has spoken to me on several occasions and expressed His love for me. And He has performed many miracles for me. Therefore, it is altogether possible that HaShem will bless us with a son, as He promised. Indeed, it’s for sure!
He continued to reflect upon and internalize HaShem’s promise until he realized that it was absolutely realistic – and certain – that HaShem would fulfill His assurance. Avraham forged his trust in HaShem’s promise into a clear truth, i.e., HaShem’s promise of children became a certainty, for “nothing is too wondrous for HaShem.”
Following in Avraham’s footsteps, may we strengthen our trust in HaShem’s promise to redeem us from our 2000 year old exile. Just as He performed great miracles for our ancestors, He will perform great miracles for us. His promise is something that we can rely on. It’s ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN!

Dreaming Quote
How Brightly
How brightly can we dream of light and love, of revelation and happiness – for ourselves, for our world? How often and long can we dream? How real can we dream? We need to give more to our all-important ability to dream. It may just be our greatest act of creativity.

DIVINE LIGHT – 3rd Av, 5769
The Mystical Light of the Baal Shem Tov
Section 18.
The following story was told many times by the Alter Rebbe, who heard it from his Rebbe, the Mezritcher Maggid.
Once, the Baal Shem Tov was teaching the Chevraya Kadisha (his inner circle of followers) intimate secrets of the Torah that had never before been heard in this world before. These secrets could not even be found in any of the writings of the early mekubolim (Masters of Kabbalah) or even the Arizal.
And all the Baal Shem Tov’s disciples were Torah giants in their own right, especially the eminent Reb Dov Ber. Even before coming to the Baal Shem Tov, Reb Dov Ber was famous for having studied and reviewed every available book of Torah, both of revealed knowledge and mystical thought, one hundred and one times.
Upon this occasion, Reb Dov Ber heard previously unknown teachings about such deep concepts of Torah that they utterly confused him. As he thought about the Baal Shem Tov’s ability to transmit such teachings, he found it difficult to believe that a soul enclothed in flesh and blood could know such hidden thoughts, probably beyond even the grasp of the angels themselves. He was seized with the thought that the voice that spoke from the mouth of the Baal Shem Tov came directly from his disembodied soul. At the same time, several of the other disciples were so mesmerized by these teachings that they finally were compelled to touch the Baal Shem’s hand to see if it was tangible.

Today 3rd Av, 5769 – “Little Mitzvos“
You may think, how does one little Mitzvo help . . .
Our times are calling out to us to do Teshuva, but it’s too hard for us to change our lives. Even when we try, we end up reverting back to nothing, everything as was. We MUST show HaShem that we are seeing the signs and that it means something to us.
In this way, when HaShem asks what did we did, we can reply “I took this on…”
You must not consider this “Little Mitzvos” as a replacement for the Shulchan Oruch – you must continue learning Halochos via mainstream Seforim and with Shiurim.

Halacha – Tshuvos – 3rd Av, 5769
Cutting Nails During The Nine Days
With regard to cutting nails during the nine days the Mogen Avrohom (551:11) says that although an Aveil cannot cut his nails, the nine days are more lenient for this Halacha and certainly it is permissible to cut L’Kavod Shabbos. The Taz (13) disagrees and forbids cutting nails during Shavua She’chal Bo, the week that Tisha B’Av falls in. However even the Taz agrees that you may cut your nails L’Kavod Shabbos. The Elya Rabba and Yad Efraim say this heter only applies to people who cut their nails every Erev Shabbos.
This year since Erev Shabbos is not in Shavua She’Chal Bo you are permitted to cut your nails even according to the Taz. Also a woman who needs to cut her nails to go to the mikva may do so even in Shavua She’Chal Bo. Similarly a Mohel may cut his nails.
Important Note: We try to convey the Tshuva to the best of our ability. We admit that our understanding may not be accurate. Please also understand that this Tshuva may not be the final word on this topic. One should consult a Rav before drawing any conclusions.

Personal Destruction Of The Kodesh Kadashim
By a Korban Mitzora, which is a punishment for talking Lashon Hara, the Kohen dips his finger in oil and sprinkles it seven time “Lifnei Hashem” (VaYikra 14:16). The Toras Kohanim says that this means towards the Kodesh HaKadashim. The Chofetz Chaim says (Shmiras HaLashon 2:5) that there is a spiritual Bais HaMikdash in Shamayim. Each aveira we do causes damage to a certain part of that Bais HaMikdash. In order to repair that damage a person must perform their Kapara in the corresponding part of the Bais HaMikdash on earth.
We see from the sprinkling of the oil of the Mitzora towards the Kodesh HaKadashim that the damage caused by speaking Lashon Hara penetrates to the heart of all Kedusha, the Kodesh HaKadashim itself. Titus stabbed the curtain separating the Kodesh from the Kodesh HaKadashim. Our Lashon Hara is taking the dagger and destroying the Makon HaAron itself.
“Zachor Eis Asher Asa Hashem L’Miriam BaDerech B’Tzaischem MiMitzrayim”
The Ramban and other Rishonim count, among the Mitzvos Aseh Min HaTorah, the mitzva of remembering and saying with your mouth each day what Hashem did to Miriam when she spoke about her brother Moshe. The Chofetz Chaim in Shaar Tvunah Perek 12 says that being Mikayem this mitzva can save you from the aveira of Lashon Hara. More than just saying the pasuk, says the Chofetz Chaim, one must think about the incident in order for it to have its intended effect.

GuardUrEyes A website for Jews struggling to maintain their moral purity in today’s world |
Why is Sexual purity so important in Judaism? Our sages called Shmiras Habris “Yesod”, meaning “Foundation”. The foundation of a building is “underground” and no one sees it, yet it holds up the entire building! Shmiras Habris is the hidden part of a Jew, it’s the real you. If the foundation of a Jew is weak, his whole spiritual structure is fragile and in grave danger of collapse. At guardureyes.com we are finally joining together, for ourselves and for all future generations, to strengthen the foundations of our people!
There is a lot of material out there on the subject of guarding the eyes and the Bris, but sometimes “too much” is overwhelming.
A little bit each day is just right, to be able to read, digest and apply it to our lives.
The booklet “Windows to the Soul” by R’ Zvi Miller of the Salant foundation, is a MAN’S PRACTICAL GUIDE TO MASTERING HIS EYES. (Right click the link and choose “Save Target/Link As” to save the PDF booklet to your computer). To subscribe to eMussar, the daily lessons of the Salant Foundation, send email to salant@netvision.net.il
The Zohar compares this world to a churning ocean and the body of a man to a ship in the sea. Therefore, man requires knowledge in order to guide himself on a straight course, avoiding mishap and losing his way. The ocean of life roars fearfully and continuously. The winds of challenge blow and the negative impulse rips about like a tornado with unimaginable force. All of life comprises great and endless tests, which can easily capsize the ship and sink it into the murky, nethermost depths.
Yirat Shamayim and the study of Mussar will prevent the body from sinking into the miry depths of desire and corrupt character traits.
(Rabbi Yitzchak Blazer, Ohr Yisrael)
Today’s Shmiras Ainayim Chizuk
Consistency and Learning by Experience (Part 1)
“Routine and experience are the keys to control in every matter.” (Ohr Yisrael, Letter Four)
“The keys to control” are exactly what I need! What are the keys and how do we apply them to mastering our eyes?
The word “routine” implies that self-improvement does not happen overnight. Character refinement is a process that takes time. Therefore, one must develop a routine practice of guarding his eyes. By making it a habit, he will eventually train his eyes to naturally avoid looking at improper images.
RABBI AKIVA
We cannot detect the movement of the hour hand on a clock unless we look at it intermittently. In the same way, it’s hard to detect the character transformation that takes place through Mussar study and practice.
Rabbi Akiva became discouraged when he began learning Torah at age 40 and did not notice any improvement in his character.
Subsequently, he sat down near a spring and noticed a rock with a hole that had been made by the dripping water. Rabbi Akiva then remarked (Avot D’Rebbi Natan, Chapter 6), “If water which is soft can carve into a rock which is hard, than surely the Torah, which is so strong, can penetrate my heart which is only flesh and blood.”
This insight of undetectable but certain change encouraged Rabbi Akiva to rededicate himself to Torah. He understood that every word he learned infused him with spiritual health, life, and holiness. This awareness propelled him to become one of the greatest of our Sages, understanding areas of Torah that even Moshe Rabenu did not know.
