KESER SHEM TOV – 23rd Tammuz, 5769

KESER SHEM TOV

The Baal Shem Tov Times

Anthology of the Teachings of the Baal Shem Tov

Kst 186: FAITH AND SOUL-ROOTS

The Baal Shem Tov taught:

In the response of the Maimonides, we find that a certain country once sent him a question with seventy thousand signatures on it, asking him about the belief in the resurrection of the dead, since this is not mentioned explicitly in the Torah, and arguing that the rabbinical proofs for it can be disputed.

The Maimonides did not answer them directly, but instructed his disciple, Rabbi Yoseph ibn Tibbon, to answer them. The gist of the answer was that since such doubts arose in their minds, their souls are not descendent from Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, but from Sodom and Gomorrah, for there are souls that come from the heaven, and there are souls that come from the earth and the planets, as so forth.

Translation and commentary by Rabbi Yehoshua Starrett.

Today 23rd Tammuz, 5769 – “Little Mitzvos

Little Mitzvos Org

You may think, how does one little Mitzvo help . . .

Our times are calling out to us to do Teshuva, but it’s too hard for us to change our lives. Even when we try, we end up reverting back to nothing, everything as was. We MUST show HaShem that we are seeing the signs and that it means something to us.

In this way, when HaShem asks what did we did, we can reply “I took this on…”

You must not consider this “Little Mitzvos” as a replacement for the Shulchan Oruch – you must continue learning Halochos via mainstream Seforim and with Shiurim.

What To Do About Tikun Chatzos

The Shulchan Aruch itself does not explicitly mention Tikun Chatzos. In (1:2) it says that tefilos over the Churban and the Galus are very desirable, if you are awake at the changing of the Mishmaros (each third of the night). The next si’if says that it is fitting for every Yiras Shamayim to be sad about the Churban Bais HaMikdash. The Mishna Brura (9) discusses at length some of the Inyanin of Tikun Chatzos, which includes sitting on the floor with ashes on your head and saying Tehilim and Piyutim.

It was, and still is, according to the minhag of the Arizal, the custom for Yechidim to sleep form the beginning of the night until Chatzos, then arise to say the Tikun and then learn until the time for davening in the morning. Although revived somewhat in recent years, this minhag is by and large not performed by most Yirei Shamayim. The reason given is the weakness of the generation.

However the Pischei Tshuvos (1:10) brings from various sources that each person should participate in this to the degree possible, and it should not be forgotten altogether. Everyone should try to say it at least periodically, once a week, month, or at least during the three weeks. Moreover if you cannot say the whole tikun you should at least say part of it or even one or two Pirkei Tehilim from the Tikun , or even a single pasuk (Darkei Shalom), or even just to think about it at Chatzos (Chavas Da’as).

Additionally says the Pischei Tshuvos, if you are still awake at Chatzos you may say it before you go to sleep (Rav Yaakov Emden, Malbim).

The Shechina And The Tongue

The word “Lashon” has the same numerical value (386) as the word “Shechina” (with the Kollel). The Chida says, this shows us that if someone defiles his speech, he will not be zocheh to greet the Shechina.

“Zachor Eis Asher Asa Hashem L’Miriam BaDerech B’Tzaischem MiMitzrayim”

The Ramban and other Rishonim count, among the Mitzvos Aseh Min HaTorah, the mitzva of remembering and saying with your mouth each day what Hashem did to Miriam when she spoke about her brother Moshe. The Chofetz Chaim in Shaar Tvunah Perek 12 says that being Mikayem this mitzva can save you from the aveira of Lashon Hara. More than just saying the pasuk, says the Chofetz Chaim, one must think about the incident in order for it to have its intended effect.

The Daily Shmiras Ainayim Chizuk – 23rd Tammuz, 5769

The Daily Shmiras Ainayim Chizuk – 23rd Tammuz, 5769

GuardUrEyes

GuardUrEyes

A website for Jews struggling to maintain their moral purity in today’s world

Why is Sexual purity so important in Judaism? Our sages called Shmiras Habris “Yesod”, meaning “Foundation”. The foundation of a building is “underground” and no one sees it, yet it holds up the entire building! Shmiras Habris is the hidden part of a Jew, it’s the real you. If the foundation of a Jew is weak, his whole spiritual structure is fragile and in grave danger of collapse. At guardureyes.com we are finally joining together, for ourselves and for all future generations, to strengthen the foundations of our people!

There is a lot of material out there on the subject of guarding the eyes and the Bris, but sometimes “too much” is overwhelming.
A little bit each day is just right, to be able to read, digest and apply it to our lives.

The booklet “Windows to the Soul” by R’ Zvi Miller of the Salant foundation, is a MAN’S PRACTICAL GUIDE TO MASTERING HIS EYES. (Right click the link and choose “Save Target/Link As” to save the PDF booklet to your computer). To subscribe to eMussar, the daily lessons of the Salant Foundation, send email to salant@netvision.net.il

The Zohar compares this world to a churning ocean and the body of a man to a ship in the sea. Therefore, man requires knowledge in order to guide himself on a straight course, avoiding mishap and losing his way. The ocean of life roars fearfully and continuously. The winds of challenge blow and the negative impulse rips about like a tornado with unimaginable force. All of life comprises great and endless tests, which can easily capsize the ship and sink it into the murky, nethermost depths.

Yirat Shamayim and the study of Mussar will prevent the body from sinking into the miry depths of desire and corrupt character traits.
(Rabbi Yitzchak Blazer, Ohr Yisrael)

Today’s Shmiras Ainayim Chizuk

The Study of Mussar

“Who will show us the straight path? Yirat Shamayim rules over everything. ‘Awareness of Hashem’ has the power to curb desire so that it will not overstep its bounds”. (Ohr Yisrael, Letter Four)

Awareness of Hashem is hard to achieve in today’s lifestyle. Can’t we succeed in our spiritual quest without attaining Awareness of Hashem?

King Solomon explained that Awareness of Hashem is the sole antidote for the negative impulse. The Awareness of Hashem is the awareness that:

(1)   Hashem sees our actions and knows our thoughts.
(2)   Hashem judges all of our deeds and metes out the consequences. The reward and punishment that the soul experiences in the World to Come, is infinitely greater than the pleasure and pain of this world.

It is critically important to understand that without genuine Awareness of Hashem, it is impossible to master desire. Just as a security guard will deter a thief from robbing a store, only the awareness that we are in G-d’s presence, will empower us with the ability to control our eyes.

MUSSAR STUDY

The most effective way to acquire Awareness of Hashem is through the daily study of Mussar, which is the ethical teachings of the Torah and character refinement. Some of the classical Mussar texts are: Mesilat Yesharim (The Path of the Just), Orchot Tzadikim (The Ways of the Righteous), Chovot HaLevavot (Duties of the Heart), Ohr Yisrael, Pirkei Avot, Mishlei, and Kohellet.

In the book Maggid Mesharim, Rav Yoseph Caro, author of the Shulchan Aruch, records Torah teachings and secrets that were revealed to him by an angel. Once the angel said to him, “Read one section from Chovot HaLevavot every day in order to humble the negative impulse.” If Rav Yoseph Caro, who was a pure and holy tzadik, was told to learn Mussar every day, is there any question that we need to learn Mussar every day to humble our Yetzer Hara?

In fact, the Rosh, the Tur, the Arizal, the Vilna Gaon as well as the Mishneh Berurah (Chapter 1 and 603) ruled that every person should study Mussar every day.

Everyone has different abilities depending on the tribe they represent. Let us all unify and work together in the battle against the Sitra Acher.

WISDOM CAN ONLY BE LOWERED TO A CERTAIN POINT – IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND IT READ IT OVER TWO THREE TIMES AND THINK ABOUT IT

Esav would kill all the people Avroham converted

-   Once Esav messed up his tikan, he went all out for the Sitra Achra (side of evil)
-   He had to try and ruin all rectifications that Avrahom made.
-   Esav would hunt down and try to kill all these converts.
-   After Avrahom’s death many of these converts started returning to their old ways. For this reason their merit did not protect them.
-   Since they were circumcised they were always going to be bound to the side of holiness to some degree, which promoted Esav to kill them.
-   The question is since Avrahom made them they should not have been destroyed, since the products of righteous man last.
-   Most of these converts were from the people of Canaan.
-   These people have a genetic flaw which would not allow them to associate with Kedushah. This is why the nation of Yisroel were commanded to wipe them out. A proof is that many returned to their old ways.
-   Avrahom should not have taken them in. He took them in since he was busy with the attribute of chesed. However they were not going to be everlasting.

Rabbi Nachman’s – Sayings and Teachings – 23rd Tammuz, 5769

Rabbi Nachman’s – Sayings & Teachings – From The Essential Rabbi Nachman

Azamra org - Torah for Our Time

A treasury of sayings, teachings, parables and stories by the outstanding Chassidic sage, mystic and visionary, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov (1772-1810), whose message of faith, hope, courage, simplicity and joy is essential to each one of us and essential to the whole world.

Translated by Avraham Greenbaum

SERVING G-D – Removing the shadow to reveal the light

Strive to nullify every one of your negative traits until you become absolutely nothing before G-d.

Start with one trait until you nullify it completely. Then work on your other traits, one by one, until they are totally non-existent.

The more you nullify your negative traits, the more G-d’s glory will shine and be revealed in you, until “The earth radiates with His glory” (Ezekiel 43:2).

G-d’s glory is like light. The larger an object standing in front of a source of light, the greater the shadow it casts. When you set up a thin rod in front of the sun, it throws only a small shadow. A larger object throws a bigger shadow, while a great structure throws an even larger shadow. The shadow is caused by the obstruction of the light.

The same is true of G-d’s glory. When something material stands in front of something spiritual, it casts a shadow. The denser the material, the more shadow it casts.

The deeper you are sunk in some negative trait or worldly desire, the greater the shadow it casts over G-d’s glory, causing His light to be hidden from you. But as you nullify these traits and desires, you also remove this shadow and the light of G-d’s glory is revealed.

When you succeed in nullifying the shadow completely, turning everything into absolute nothingness, then G-d’s glory is revealed in all the world . There is nothing to hide the light and cause a shadow. And then, “The whole earth is filled with His glory” (Isaiah 6:3).

Perek Shira: The Rat Sings- Every Breath You Take

“Every creature on land has a parallel in the sea except the rat.” Chulin 127b. The rat is the only creature that is not worthy enough for Hashem to have a created a similar animal in the oceans. The Toras Kohanim in Parshas Shemini says “every creature that is Tamei on the land, its counterpart at sea is Tahor. That means that the rat is the only creature in the entire world is completely Tamei. It is further from Hashem than any creature on the planet.

Why is this? The Knaf Renanim explains that every creature has some redeeming feature from which people can learn from. The Gemara in Eruvin (100b) says that we learn Tznius from a cat, not stealing from an ant, etc. Each animal sings to Hashem thanking Him for its unique attribute. The rat doesn’t have a single unique attribute. It has nothing desirable in it character. What can we learn from the rat? We can learn that life no matter how worthless and how empty is a great gift in and of itself.

The rat sings, “Kol HaNeshama Tihalel Ka”, every neshama praises Hashem. Chazal tell us that the word Neshama in this pasuk can mean “Neshima”; breath. We thank Hashem for every breath he gives us on this earth. Whether life is good or bad; fulfilling or empty; whether we are capable of accomplishing great things or grounded by our handicaps; no matter what, we thank Hashem for life itself. Even is a person is unconscious and on a respirator he still thanks Hashem for every “breath” he takes. Each breath of life is a gift and its greatness should not be dismissed.

When The Bread-Winner Goes To The Back of The Line

The Rema (166:1) writes that waiting a long period of time between making an al netilas yadayim and hamotzei on bread is a hefsek just as is talking between washing and making a hamotzei. The Rema writes that waiting more than the time it takes to walk 22 amos (the Piskei Teshuvos writes that this varies according to the poskim between 16-30 seconds) is considered a hefsek.

Based on this Rema, people should be careful to have their bread (sandwich) ready to make a hamotzei before washing so as not to delay too long and create a hefsek between washing and hamotzei. However, it should be noted that if there was a hefsek for a longer period of time, so long as one didn’t have hesech ha’das one need not wash over again.

This halacha comes up often on Shabbos when the head of the household makes the hamotzei for everyone at the table. The Mishna Brura explains (165:6) that to prevent there being a long period of time between the al netilas yadayim and hamotzei, the head of the household should wash last so that his al netilas yadayim is closest in time to his hamotzei.

Music In The 3 Weeks: Recorded Music, Acapella, Kumzitz, Singing To Yourself, Music Lessons

The Mishna Brura (551:16) says that it is assur to dance in the 3 weeks. This is the reason for the issur of listening to music. All the recent poskim (including Rav Moshe Feinstein and the Minchas Yitzchok) say that this includes listening to music even recorded from a tape or CD.

Rav Elyashiv, Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, The Tzitz Eliezer (15:33) and others say that even acapella recordings, singing that doesn’t have musical instruments, are also forbidden.

A gathering of people are forbidden to sing if it is the kind of songs that will lead to dancing. Songs of praise to Hashem or in the spirit of the nine days are permitted.

Singing to yourself is permitted because it is just to lift your spirits and you don’t usually break out in dance. Nevertheless the Steipler Gaon did not let his children sing during the 3 weeks, only on Shabbos.

Music teachers can continue to give lessons in the 3 weeks if they need to for their livelihood. Rav Elyashiv paskens that although permissible until Rosh Chodesh Av, lessons should not be given in the 9 days. (see Pischei Tshuvos 493:4 and 551:13)

Important Note: We try to convey the Tshuva to the best of our ability. We admit that our understanding may not be accurate. Please also understand that this Tshuva may not be the final word on this topic. One should consult a Rav before drawing any conclusions.

Don’t Get Caught In The Cemetery!

The Shulchan Aruch (OC 606:3) says that there is a Cheirem to speak evil about someone who has already died. The Rema (CM 620:38) says that if you do so, you need to fast and give tzedaka. If the person’s kever is close by, then you need to go and ask them Mechila. If the kever is far away you may send a Shaliach.
