The Baal Shem Tov’s Teachings on Prayer

Section 3.7

Do not recite too many psalms before you pray, so as not to become too weak to recite the obligatory prayers.

Do not recite too many psalms before you pray, so as not to become too weak to recite the obligatory prayers – the Hymns of Praise , the Shema , and the Amidah – with great spiritual attachment. First, recite the main parts with devekus. Then, if G-d gives you more strength, you can say Psalms or the Song of Songs with devekus afterward. On Yom Kippur too, say the prayers of the Machzor before Ne’ilah in a state of Katnut (constricted consciousness), to that you can afterward pray afterwards with devekus.

The Wisdom of Kabbalah

“Love thy friend as thyself.” Rabbi Akiva says this is a great rule in the Torah Collective and Individual

The Love for the Creator & Love for the Created BeingsLove Thy Friend as Thyself

We should examine further and understand the meaning of the verse, “Love thy friend as thyself.” The literal meaning of it is to love your friend in the same amount that you love yourself. However, we see that the collective cannot keep up with it at all. If it had said love your friend as much as your friend loves you, there still would not be many people who could observe it completely, yet it would be acceptable.

But to love my friend as much as I love myself appears to be impossible. Even if there were but one person in the world except me, that would still be impossible, much less when the world is full of people. Moreover, if one loved everyone as much as one loves oneself, he would have no time for himself. But one must willingly satisfy one’s own needs without neglect, for one loves oneself.

It is not so concerning the needs of the collective; for one has no strong motivation to stimulate one’s desire to work for them. Even if one had a desire, could one still keep this statement literally? Would one’s strength endure? If not, how can the Torah obligate us to do something that is not in any way feasible?

We should not consider that this statement is spoken by way of exaggeration, because we are cautioned by the saying: “Though shall not add to it nor subtract from it.” All the interpreters agreed to interpret the text literally. Moreover they said that one must satisfy the needs of one’s friend even in a place where one is himself in need. Even then we must satisfy the needs of our friend and leave ourselves needing.

The Tosfot interpret that anyone who buys a Hebrew slave, it is as though he buys a master for himself. And the Tosfot interpret that should one happen to have but one pillow, if one lies on it oneself, he does not keep, “For he is happy with thee.” And if one does not lie on it and does not give it to one’s slave, this is sodomite rule. It turns out that against his will one must give it to one’s servant. It turns out that one has bought oneself a master.

The Daily GuardUrEyes Chizuk – 8th Tammuz, 5769

The Daily GuardUrEyes Chizuk – 8th Tammuz, 5769

GuardUrEyes

A website for Jews struggling to maintain their moral purity in today’s world

Why is Sexual purity so important in Judaism? Our sages called Shmiras Habris “Yesod”, meaning “Foundation”. The foundation of a building is “underground” and no one sees it, yet it holds up the entire building! Shmiras Habris is the hidden part of a Jew, it’s the real you. If the foundation of a Jew is weak, his whole spiritual structure is fragile and in grave danger of collapse. At guardureyes.com we are finally joining together, for ourselves and for all future generations, to strengthen the foundations of our people!

There is a lot of material out there on the subject of guarding the eyes and the Bris, but sometimes “too much” is overwhelming.
A little bit each day is just right, to be able to read, digest and apply it to our lives.

Today’s Shmiras Ainayim Chizuk

The Zohar compares this world to a churning ocean and the body of a man to a ship in the sea. Therefore, man requires knowledge in order to guide himself on a straight course, avoiding mishap and losing his way. The ocean of life roars fearfully and continuously. The winds of challenge blow and the negative impulse rips about like a tornado with unimaginable force. All of life comprises great and endless tests, which can easily capsize the ship and sink it into the murky, nethermost depths.

Yirat Shamayim and the study of Mussar will prevent the body from sinking into the miry depths of desire and corrupt character traits.
(Rabbi Yitzchak Blazer, Ohr Yisrael)

Make a New Beginning

If we have not properly guarded our eyes in the past, we can change our behavior and Hashem will help us to improve our ways.

In fact, Hashem sent us an uplifting and encouraging message through Yechezkel HaNavi: “Throw off all of your aveirot and make a new heart and a new spirit for yourselves.” (Based on Yechezkel 18:30)

A person may say to themselves: “I sincerely want to change my behavior and follow the Torah rules regarding Shmirat Einayim – Guarding the Eyes. However, I feel burdened by my past conduct. It’s hard for me to believe that Hashem will forgive me“.

Rabenu Yona (Yesod HaTeshuvah) illuminates the path of return to Hashem and writes:

“If a person has acted improperly and wants to take shelter beneath the “Wings of the Shechinah” and enter into the gates of repentance, I will show him the way to proceed.

On the day that you lift your heart to return to Hashem, throw off all of your aveirot as if they never were. Consider yourself as a newborn child, having neither merit nor culpability. Today is the beginning of your deeds. Today you will reflect on all of your ways so that you do not stray from the good path. This outlook will facilitate your complete return to Hashem because you will be unburdened from the weight of all of your aveirot.

Do not be hindered by thoughts that hold you back from returning to Hashem. For you might feel, ‘How can I have the nerve to return to Hashem, after I acted so inappropriately so many times? How can I come in front of Hashem? I feel embarrassed, like a thief who was caught in the act of stealing. How can I enter His courtyards; how can I observe His Mitzvot?”

Do not allow these negative thoughts to enter your heart! These feelings of despair are the influence of the negative impulse.

Rather, know the attribute of our merciful Creator is that “His arms are always open to welcome those that return to Him.”

Even more, Hashem himself releases us from the psychological barriers to repentance by urging us to “throw off our misdeeds.” Therefore, Hashem grants each one of us the opportunity to rectify our ways, regardless of our past conduct. He lets us renew ourselves and gives us a fresh start.

TODAY: Throw off the burden of your aveirot and start over. Hashem gives everyone another chance!

Avrahom gave the unholy names to the sons of his concubine

-   The gifts given by Avrahom to these children included the mysteries of the unholy names.
-   These names could be used to force angles and demons to do your will.
-   There are many levels of impurity. These mysteries given to them by Avrahom also contained truth in them. Avrahom included these to insure they retained some attachment.
-   These unclean names were taken by Sara from Egypt when she was locked in Paroah’s palace.
-   These children traveled east where they became leaders.

Perek Shira

Perek Shira: Rain, Rain, Go Away, Come Back When There are Bills To Pay!

When my wife and I spent a year in Yerushalayim one of the big bonuses for us was the almost daily glorious weather. October, November, December, January… The beautiful sunshine the warm weather just kept up day after day. Then one February day I had to run an errand and I waited on line with an acquaintance who struck up a conversation about the weather. He complained bitterly about the lack of rain and how terrible it is. I of course shook my head in agreement meekly mimicking his sad sentiments but deep down I was more than thankful although I felt really guilty and selfish about it.

The fact is that the gemara Bava Metzia (84b) says that a day of rain is as tough as a day of judgment. In the days of Rebbi Yehuda HaNassi it never rained but the ground was always full of water. The gemara adds that if we weren’t so desperately for rain for our survival the Chachomim would have davened to make it go away forever. Yes, rain is our lifeblood (even in the 21st century!). Can’t live with it and can’t live without it. If rain is so important and integral to life what is it about rain that drove the Chachomim nuts? Were they such outdoorsmen that they felt claustrophobic when they had to stay indoors?

Rain we know is the symbol of Parnasa. If we examine our lives honestly we all know that our livelihood literally falls from Shamayim with no relevance to how smart or shrewd we are. Similarly, even with all the technology today we are still dependent on the weather’s whims (which we can’t even predict accurately, let alone control or alter).

We see in the Torah that money is the root of all evil. Having too much is considered a far bigger Nisayon than having too little. This could be the meaning of the gemara. The gemara explains that if we were able to get through life without dealing with money the Chachomim would have long ago davened for it to become extinct. Unfortunately your ticket to survival in this world is money. You can’t play if you don’t pay. However when it rains on you, keep in mind that this is a judgment day for you. Money is double edged sword. In Rebbi Yehuda HaNassi’s great zechus money was not really an issue in his day. Just like he had all the luxuries in the world yet at his death he testified on himself that he did not enjoy even one iota of Olam HaZeh, so too his generation had all it needed without being busy with it.

The Rain Sings: “Geshem Nedavos Tanif Elokim Nachalascha V’Nilah Ata Konanta”; You Hashem sent a generous rain, to strengthen your inheritance, when it languished. We thank Hashem not for making us rich but for sending us money when we need it to help accomplish exactly what we need to do in life. Other than that let the sun shine on us the light of Torah every glorious day.

Sefer Baal Shem Tov

The Baal Shem Tov Times

The Baal Shem Tov’s Teachings on the Torah

But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh lived from those men that went to spy out the land. (Numbers 14:38)

[A Tzaddik] should join his life-force to the life-force of the wicked. But if the wicked refuse to attach themselves to him, then their life-force remains with the Tzaddik. 1 This is what is written: “But Joshua . . . lived from those men that went to spy out the land.” 2
Ben Poras Yosef, Vayetze

1 The sefer Da’as Moshe (parashas Noach) explains this as follows: The Talmud states that G-d created a world of opposites, based upon the verse: “G-d made one thing against another” (Ecclesiastes 7:14). Every Tzaddik has a wicked person opposite him, and both have two portions – in heaven and in hell. If the Tzaddik is worthy, he will receive his own portion in the World to Come and the portion of his wicked protagonist. If he is undeserving it, he will receive his own portion in hell with that of the wicked. According to the Baal Shem Tov, this principle applies to this world as well. The Magid of Mezritch explained that this occurs when the Tzaddik admonishes the wicked. The Tzaddik’s words are the aspect of the Sefirah of Malchus, and the listener’s ears correspond to the World of Hearing, Binah – which is higher than Malchus. When the listener does not heed the words of the Tzaddik, then the Tzaddik regains his own words, as well as the aspect of the listener.
2 That is, his own life force was added to from those of the other spies.

The Wisdom of Kabbalah

“Love thy friend as thyself.” Rabbi Akiva says this is a great rule in the Torah Collective and Individual

The Love for the Creator & Love for the Created BeingsThat Which You Hate, Do Not Do To Your Friend

If we can somehow reconcile the above text, here comes Hillel’s statement to the foreigner who came before him and asked to be converted, as it says in the Gmarah, “Convert me so that you will teach me the entire Torah while I am standing on one leg.” He told him “That which you hate, do not do to your friend.” This is the entire Torah, and the rest means just go and study. We see that he told him that the entire Torah is the interpretation of the verse, “Love thy friend as thyself.”

Now, according to the words of Hillel, the teacher of all the Kabbalists of his time, it is perfectly clear to us that the primary purpose of our holy Torah is to bring us to that sublime degree where we can observe this verse “Love thy friend as thyself”, because it specifically says: “the rest means go and study.” This means that they interpret for us how to come to that rule.

It is surprising that such a statement can be correct in most of the issues of the Torah, which concern man and G-d, when every beginner evidently knows that this is the heart of the Torah and not the interpretation of “Love thy friend as thyself.”

The Chofetz Chaim (Zecher L’Miriam 3) says that for this fact alone, that Hashem promises to stand beside you and protect you from all the Tzaros in the world, it is worthwhile for a person to be Mikabel on himself to stay away from Lashon Hara.

In a world where you never know when the next bomb will go off or where the next attack will take place, this is the number to dial!

“Zachor Eis Asher Asa Hashem L’Miriam BaDerech B’Tzaischem MiMitzrayim”

The Ramban and other Rishonim count, among the Mitzvos Aseh Min HaTorah, the mitzva of remembering and saying with your mouth each day what Hashem did to Miriam when she spoke about her brother Moshe. The Chofetz Chaim in Shaar Tvunah Perek 12 says that being Mikayem this mitzva can save you from the aveira of Lashon Hara. More than just saying the pasuk, says the Chofetz Chaim, one must think about the incident in order for it to have its intended effect.
