The Baal Shem Tov Times

The Mystical Light of the Baal Shem Tov

Section 8.

The Baal Shem Tov was incapable of speaking down-to-earth language with simple people because of his devekus – his intense attachment to Heaven – until his Heavenly mentor, Achiyah Ha Shaloni,1 taught him to recite certain psalms which enabled him to speak everyday language without losing his devekus.2

1In prior incarnations, Achiyah HaShaloni was one who left Egypt and was a prophet during the time of King David.

The Baal Shem Tov Times

The Baal Shem Tov’s Teachings on Prayer

Section 3.8

Contemplating our own lowliness and the greatness of the Creator before prayer.

The early Chasidim would wait an hour before prayer and hour after prayer. For the first hour, they would contemplate their own lowliness and the greatness of the Creator, as the author of the Shulchan Aruch says. During the last hour, they would contemplate about how they did not pray well enough before the great King, and how their prayers accomplished nothing.

The Wisdom of Kabbalah

Exile and Redemption – The Difference Between a Secular Ideal and a Religious Ideal

A secular ideal stems from humanness and hence cannot raise itself above humanness, whereas a religious idea, which stems from the Creator, can raise itself above humanity, because the basis for a secular ideal is equalization, and the prize of glory in the eyes of man, and he acts in order to boast in the eyes of people. And although one is sometimes disgraced in the eyes of one’s generation, one still relies on other generations and it is still a precious thing for him, like a gem that fuels its owner though no one knows of it or cherishes it. A religious idea, however, is based on glory in the eyes of G-d. Hence he who follows a religious idea can raise himself above humanity.

And so it stands among the nations of our Diaspora. As long as we followed the path of Torah we remained safe, for it is known to all the nations that we are a highly developed nation, and wanted our cooperation and to exploit us, according to their own selfish desires. Yet we still had great power among the nations, for after all the exploitation, there still remained a handsome portion left for us, greater than for most civilians of the land.

But because people rebelled against the Torah, in their aspiration to execute their selfish device, they lost the purpose of life, meaning the work of G-d. And because the sublime goal was switched with the selfish goals for the pleasures of life, anyone who attained fortune raised his own goal with glory and beauty. And where the religious scattered his monetary surplus on righteousness and good deeds and other such collective needs, the selfish ones scattered their surplus on the joys of life: on food and drink, clothing and jewels, and were equalized with the distinguished in every nation.

By these words I only mean to show that the Torah, as a natural law of development, even when accompanied by blind faith, goes hand in hand in wonderful unity, in a way that the bad incidences in the Diaspora, that we have much to tell of from the days of our exile, were all for the reason that we embezzled the Torah. If we had kept the commandments of the Torah, no harm would come to us.

Today 3rd Tammuz, 5769 – “Little Mitzvos”

Little Mitzvos Org

You may think, how does one little Mitzvo help . . .

Our times are calling out to us to do Teshuva, but it’s too hard for us to change our lives. Even when we try, we end up reverting back to nothing, everything as was. We MUST show HaShem that we are seeing the signs and that it means something to us.

In this way, when HaShem asks what did we did, we can reply “I took this on…”

You must not consider this “Little Mitzvos” as a replacement for the Shulchan Oruch – you must continue learning Halochos via mainstream Seforim and with Shiurim.

The Daily GuardUrEyes Chizuk – 3rd Tammuz, 5769

GuardUrEyes

A website for Jews struggling to maintain their moral purity in today’s world

Why is Sexual purity so important in Judaism? Our sages called Shmiras Habris “Yesod”, meaning “Foundation”. The foundation of a building is “underground” and no one sees it, yet it holds up the entire building! Shmiras Habris is the hidden part of a Jew, it’s the real you. If the foundation of a Jew is weak, his whole spiritual structure is fragile and in grave danger of collapse. At guardureyes.com we are finally joining together, for ourselves and for all future generations, to strengthen the foundations of our people!

There is a lot of material out there on the subject of guarding the eyes and the Bris, but sometimes “too much” is overwhelming.
A little bit each day is just right, to be able to read, digest and apply it to our lives.

Today’s Shmiras Ainayim Chizuk

The Zohar compares this world to a churning ocean and the body of a man to a ship in the sea. Therefore, man requires knowledge in order to guide himself on a straight course, avoiding mishap and losing his way. The ocean of life roars fearfully and continuously. The winds of challenge blow and the negative impulse rips about like a tornado with unimaginable force. All of life comprises great and endless tests, which can easily capsize the ship and sink it into the murky, nethermost depths.

Yirat Shamayim and the study of Mussar will prevent the body from sinking into the miry depths of desire and corrupt character traits.
(Rabbi Yitzchak Blazer, Ohr Yisrael)

DIVINE ASSISTANCE TO ATTAIN PURITY

The Mishneh (Avot 4:1) teaches, “Who is the strong man? The one who conquers his passions.” Strength is defined by the mastery of one’s desires. Like we saw in yesterday’s e-mail; Alexander, undefeated in battle, was one of the greatest military leaders in the history of the world. He was also a highly educated man, taught by Aristotle. Yet, he lacked the strength and wisdom to master his own eyes and desires.

Our Avot were true kings, because they mastered themaselves. We, the People of Israel, have the spiritual genes and dignified stature of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaacov. The awareness of our intrinsic worthiness – and our royal lineage – inspires us with the confidence that we can rule over the lesser part of ourselves. The Torah gives us the wisdom to master our eyes and our passions.

Our Sages teach us the following axiom, “A person who comes to purify himself will receive Divine assistance to attain purity.” The yearning for purity burns in the heart of every Jew. Once we begin to strive for purity, Hashem will help us gain control of our eyes. In turn, control of our eyes will give us the key to control our thoughts and actions. We will sanctify ourselves and the world we live in.

Know that if you sincerely wish to elevate yourself, Hashem will assist you in your endeavors.

Let us all unify and work together in the battle against the Sitra Acher.

WISDOM CAN ONLY BE LOWERED TO A CERTAIN POINT – IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND IT READ IT OVER TWO THREE TIMES AND THINK ABOUT IT

Regarding the blindness of Rav Shashes and Rav Yosef

-  The two Amoraim, Rav Shashes and Rav Yosef were blind.
-  They caused their own blindness on purpose.
-  The reason they did this was because their nature was to go after their eyes.
-  This does not mean they couldn’t control their eyes, but rather on their high level there was some klipah they couldn’t break because of the nature of their soul. This was connected to their eyes. This prevented them from climbing to the levels they wanted.-The method they used was staying in a dark room for a long time then going out in the sun.

Azamra org - Torah for Our Time

THE PURPOSE OF LIFE – Wisdom for life

This world exists only to bring about G-d’s eternal purpose.

There is no need to be upset about whether or not you have money. Even with money, you could waste away your days. The world deceives us completely. It makes us think we are constantly gaining but we end up with nothing. People spend years working to make money, but in the end, when they come to the final reckoning, they are left with nothing in their hands. Even when someone becomes rich, in the end he is taken from his money.

Man and wealth cannot remain together. Either the money is taken from the man or the man from his money. No- one has ever stayed with his money. Where is all the money people have been making since the beginning of time? People have always been busy making money – so where is all the money? It has all become absolutely nothing!

Who can say that he serves G-d according to G-d’s true greatness? Someone who has even the faintest conception of G-d’s greatness cannot understand how anyone could claim to serve Him. Even the highest angel cannot boast that he is able to serve G-d.

The main thing is desire. Always long and yearn to come closer to G-d.

Many people would like to serve G-d but not all have the same desire. There are many different levels of desire. Even in one and the same person, the intensity of his desire may change from moment to moment. The main thing is to yearn constantly for G-d – and in between, to pray, study and keep His commandments.

Nor is there any need for sophistication. Just be sincere and simple. Even in your sincerity, you must not be foolish. But sophistication is totally unnecessary.

It is no good to be old. Whether it’s an old Chassid or an old Tzaddik, being old is no good. Be new each day. Always make a fresh start. The only thing that improves with age is a pig, which becomes stronger as it grows older ( Shabbat 77b).

Nor is there any need to be extreme. Serving G-d is not fanaticism. The real fanatics are those who pursue the material world without serving G-d. People consider it fanatical when a person completely abandons the material world to immerse himself wholly in devotion. Yet even this is unnecessary. You can serve G-d without going to extremes.

Take my advice and don’t let the world fool you. No- one ever came to a good end by pursuing worldliness. Even those who hold the entire world in their hands end up badly, losing out both in themselves and for generations to come.

If the world is nothing, what can you do? To know what to do in this world you need help from Heaven. But as the people of Israel , we need no further help. We already know what we must do, because the Torah teaches us what to do.

People say you should not seek greatness, but I say you should seek only greatness. Look for the greatest possible Tzaddik. Choose only the greatest Tzaddik as your teacher.

The passions that wear man down do not really exist. We have to eat and drink and do what is necessary to sustain the body. Likewise, we must have children. All this is necessary, and can be accomplished in holiness and purity.

Man’s mind has the power to withstand all temptations. Every person has the potential of wisdom. You must bring out this potential wisdom and make it actual. With this potential wisdom alone you can overcome all temptations.

You may have succumbed to the desires of this world and sinned in many ways. You may have damaged your mind, leaving it weak and confused. But you still have some intelligence. With this alone you can overcome all desires. One grain of intelligence can stand against the whole world and all its temptations. Wherever you are, you can be close to G-d. You can approach G-d and serve Him even in the lowest pit of hell.

It needs tremendous effort, or help from G-d – or both – in order to subdue the impurities in the mind until you want nothing in this world and everything is the same to you. Then, “When you walk it will lead you, when you lie down it will watch over you, and when you wake up, it will comfort you” (Proverbs 6:22 ).

When you have purified your mind, there is no difference between this world, the grave, and the next world. When you only desire G-d and His Torah, all are the same. In all three you can be attached to G-d and his Torah.

However, if you are attached to this world, there is an agonizing difference. This world is spread before you while the grave is tight and narrow. But when you purify your mind, all will be the same.

Perek Shira: Zarzir – Who Do You Hang Out With?

The characteristics of a kosher or non-kosher bird are very debatable since the Torah only lists names of non-kosher birds and not definitive signs like by animals and fish. Nevertheless Acheirim say ( Chulin 65a) that we can determine the kashrus of a bird by seeing which other birds it keeps its company. “HaShachen Im Temei’im Tomei Im Tehorim Tahor”; a species of bird who dwells with non kosher birds must be non kosher and vice versa. “Lo Lechinam Holach HaZarzir im Ha”oreiv”; not for naught does the Zarzir (starling) hang out with the Oreiv (raven) says Rebbi Shimon Ben Elazar, it is therefore not kosher as well.

The pasuk says the same about people “Yagid Olov Rei’oi”; look at his friends and you will know who he is. Even if you start out better than your friends the fact that you associate with a certain element reveals a certain root beneath your surface that will be exposed outwardly over time.

The Zarzir Sings (Yeshaya 61:9): V’Nodah BaGoyim Zar’am…Ki Heim Zera Beirach Hashem”; It is clear to all the other nations that Bnei Yisroel who lives alone without any friends among the goyim, that we must be the children of Hashem since we live only with the Torah of Hashem.

Debriciner Rov: Air Travel Safety, Pleasure Trips, & Bomb Scares

Undertaking a sea voyage or trip through the desert, is only permitted for a mitzva or doing business. Rav Moshe Stern, the Debriciner Rov (Be’er Moshe Kuntras Electric 83) was asked if this means that it is forbidden to take a plane trip for pleasure? He said that the earlier gedolim including the Meishiv Shalom held that flying in a plane was considered dangerous and paskened that it was assur for pleasure.

However, says the Rav Stern, today is different and traveling in a plane is no different than any other means of transportation as thousands of planes fly each day in safety. The real halachic issue about a pleasure trip is the question of Bitul Zman and waste of money. For this one must consult a competent Rov and Yirei Shamayim.

Nevertheless he held that after a plane trip the traveler should say Birchas HaGomel using Hashem’s name. He does acknowledge however that many gedolim hold that you should say the bracha without Hashem’s name. Even in his own Shul, if someone said HaGomel without Shem Hashem, he would not protest.

If the plane is forced to make an emergency landing after receiving a bomb threat in mid air, which turned out to be not true, then according to those poskim who hold you do not say Hashem’s name by Birchas HaGomel for a plane trip, the bomb scare does not create a chiyuv to say it. HaGomel, says Rav Stern (85) is for those who faced real danger and not because you were scared by a prankster.

Important Note: We try to convey the Tshuva to the best of our ability. We admit that our understanding may not be accurate. One should learn the tshuva to verify the accuracy of our interpretation. Please also understand that this Tshuva may not be the final word on this topic. One should consult a Rav before drawing any conclusions.

Where Does Honor Come From?

The Chofetz Chaim writes in Ahavas Yisroel (Perek 3) that if the honor someone else receives is eating you up because you do not think highly of that person, just know that honor that people give that person reflects the honor that Hashem bestows upon him. Not only is it futile to try to take away his honor, but you will also cause yourself great embarrassment.

“Zachor Eis Asher Asa Hashem L’Miriam BaDerech B’Tzaischem MiMitzrayim”

The Ramban and other Rishonim count, among the Mitzvos Aseh Min HaTorah, the mitzva of remembering and saying with your mouth each day what Hashem did to Miriam when she spoke about her brother Moshe. The Chofetz Chaim in Shaar Tvunah Perek 12 says that being Mikayem this mitzva can save you from the aveira of Lashon Hara. More than just saying the pasuk, says the Chofetz Chaim, one must think about the incident in order for it to have its intended effect.

The Tzaddik’s Prayer

By Rabbi Tzvi Freeman

The enlightened master knows he lacks nothing
and so he prays for his people.
But if he lacks nothing,
then he knows that in truth they also lack nothing,
and if so, for what is he praying?
He prays they should have open eyes to see
and open hearts to know
that in truth they lack nothing.
But how can one who lacks nothing pray?
Because he knows he himself lacks nothing,
but deeper, at his very core,
he is his people
and he prays as one of them.
