Have a wonderful Shabbat 11th Kislev 5770

said to Moses,
“I have a precious gift
in My treasure house,
called the Sabbath,
and desire to give it to Israel;
go and inform them.”

Words of Wisdom

RevachL'Neshama

Today when someone has a baby in the first year of marriage people jump and say Mazal Tov. Years ago they would say, there is doubt whether this person really knows that there is a Hashem.

Two Tzadiks

ON LOVING THE EVIL-DOER

[R' Pinchas of Koretz] once said: “Who is a consummate tzadik? He who loves a consummate rasha [wicked person]. Who is an incomplete tzadik? He who loves an incomplete rasha.” Ginsburgh explains: “In the inner [depths] of one’s soul, it is the very highest level of tzadik that reaches down in love to raise up the very lowest level of rasha. The inherent goodness of the consummate tzadik sweetens the existential suffering of the consummate rasha”.*

Joke of the day 10th Kislev 5770

Breslev Israel

An elegant, sophisticated lady from California telephones El Al Airline requesting a first-class ticket for her dog. The airline attendant is astonished and promptly advises the lady that she cannot have a seat for the dog. The lady is very upset, however, at the end of the discussion the airline attendant agrees to carry the pampered poodle in a suitable cage on the plane. The plane lands at Ben Gurion, Tel Aviv, and as the service people remove the cage they notice – to their horrified surprise – that the poodle is dead. They immediately dispatch someone to fetch another poodle which looks the same as the demised dog. They happily hand over the cage to the lady who looks at the cage and flatly rejects it on the ground that: “This is not my dog!” The airline personnel are surprised again, whereupon the lady replies: “My dog was dead and I was taking her to Israel to bury her”.

SelfGrowth Keep Smiling 10th Kislev 5770

Radiate

Self-Growth - Keep Smiling
Be a sun — not a pale sun, but a bright sun, a warm sun, a friendly sun. Be a sun — not a weak sun, but a handsome sun, a beautiful sun, a majestic, magnificent sun. Radiate light and energy. Radiate joy, the love of life. Radiate optimism. Look forward to an exciting, wonderful future.
But to succeed as suns, we must fulfill two conditions:
(1) We must remember that the Creator is the source of our energy. From Him we draw the inspiration we need to glow, to shine. Therefore, we must keep our connection to the Creator alive and healthy.
(2) We must be surface-level kings, but not actual kings. Only the Creator is king.
As the Creator’s representatives, we may live in palaces, surrounded by beautiful objects, surrounded by servants. Still, we are not the King himself. We only represent Him — His power, majesty, goodness. As for true power, majesty and goodness — these are with the Creator.

(Excerpted from “Be a King“.)

Mr. Cohen walks along the street accompanied by his dog when he meets Mr. Green. SelfGrowth Keep Smiling 9th Kislev 5770

Lessons

Self-Growth - Keep Smiling
We need to appreciate our lives to enjoy our lives. But can we appreciate what is unpleasant? Can we attach value to what is painful? Can we be excited over what hurts us? Yes — if we learn to see and know the Creator.
The highest pleasure is to see the Creator, to know the Creator. But to see or know the Creator requires special sensitivity — it requires learning. We need to learn about life, about the different forces that inspire and invigorate our world.
Therefore, to learn must be important to us. It must be precious to us. If we don’t use our opportunity to learn — if we disregard it — we walk away from happiness.
Sometimes, learning is difficult and unpleasant. Sometimes it’s painful. In some way, our lessons hurt us — wound us. Still, we need to appreciate and value these lessons. We even need to enjoy them. For only through them may we reach what we want.

Teachings of the Sages 8th Kislev 5770

Two Tzadiks

ON REPENTANCE

“A chossid once asked Rav Pinchas of Koretz, zt”l, ‘We find in the Sefer Chassidim, that even though the Gemara in Taanis 12 tells us that fasting is good for destroying the bad parts of a dream like a fire destroys the bad parts of flax, it only refers to one who has repented. All the fasting in the world, however, will not avail for one who does not do teshuvah. The Sefer Chassidim goes on to tell of someone who had a bad dream on Shabbos and tried to ameliorate it by fasting that day and the next. Unfortunately, his dream came to be in all its detail because he failed to do teshuvah. My question is, if someone has a bad dream why not just concentrate on doing teshuvah instead of fasting, since this is the main objective of the fast anyway?’

“The Rebbe answered, ‘Fasting is preferable for a very simple reason. The more physical something is, the more we find of it in this world. For example, there is more inanimate matter in the world than animate life. Likewise, there are far more non-Jews than Jews in the world. Even within the Jewish people itself, there are more wicked people than righteous. And within the overwhelming majority of people, there are more bad or useless thoughts than good. Most people have a hard time focusing on any good thought for more than half an hour or so. This is especially true of someone whose day is almost entirely focused on mundane matters. To feel connected all the time to spirituality in such a situation is rare indeed! Anyone who fasts in order to come to teshuvah is involved in doing a mitzvah the entire day, and this is true even if he finds it difficult to focus on the teshuvah aspect of the fast throughout the day.’ Rav Pinchas added, ‘Another reason why fasting is better is that it naturally subdues the physical. This is a great help for one who wishes to do teshuvah. One can come to the highest levels while fasting. It is very rare that one who understands the purpose of the fast will fail to come to true teshuvah!’”.*

Joke of the day 8th Kislev 5770

Breslev Israel

The town fool thinks that he is one of the wisest of the community. The town folk tell him he is a fool. One day he hears the rabbi explain the sentence of the Bible “Shomer Psayim Hashem,” – The Almighty protects the foolish… He says to himself this is my opportunity. I’ll jump off the highest building, if the Almighty protects me then I am truly a fool, but if I get hurt then I’ll have proven to all that I am a wise man. Off he goes to the top of the highest building and jumps off the roof of the three story building. Of course he broke many bones. While they rushed him off to the hospital they heard him moaning, “I knew I was a wise man. I didn’t realize how wise I was.”
